Lip-Smacking New Year’s Eve
When I lived in Chicago, I always threw parties to celebrate New Year’s Eve because my place was big enough to do so and my neighbors were great. Now that I live in New York, throwing a big party is out of the question. My tiny closet of an apartment can’t hold more than 1.5 guests at a time. I’m really excited about my first NYE in the city, I’m just not sure what I’ll do to celebrate.
I have to come up with something soon because I think I may have 3 or 4 out-of-town guests coming in to visit. I know Anna-Scarlet is definitely coming in from Louisiana because she already bought her plane ticket. Jerome only lives a couple of hours away from here–in Washington, DC–so he might join us. (The 3 of us went to grad school together.) Also, two friends from Chicago that now live on the east coast, Mags in Boston and Lana in Philly, will be here too. It should be a great group!
I already have a general idea of what I want to wear. A sexy dress in SoHo has been calling out my name for the better part of a month. It’s a shorter, halter version of that dress that Salma Hayek always wears and the store has it available in red and black. Ready to get dressed up, but nowhere to go (and no lips to smack) just yet …
Sooner rather than later, everything worth going to will be fully booked. Although all of my in-town friends want to do something, so far, no one has stepped forward to say, “THIS is what we should all do.” Hmmm … Maybe I’ll place a few calls around this weekend to see who still has space and what’s going on. By the way, what are you all doing for New Year’s Eve? And, to the New Yorkers, do you guys have any advice on places to definitely check out and/or places to be sure to avoid on NYE?

Avoid Times Square, and bars near Times Square, like the plague. You’ve got to really do your research on where to go because the door prices are outrageous at bars, and the best advice I can give you is, BOOK NOW. Oh and also? Staying somewhere near wherever you’ll be sleeping that night is key. It can be near impossible to get a cab that night and the subways are a pain in the ass.
That being said I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing and have booked nothing. One of those, do as I say not as I do type things :)

Ordering Chinese take-out, and watching Bollywood movies!!! (Woo-Hoo! Do we know how to live or what?!!)

Wow – your life sounds exciting. Friends from all over visiting, dashing about the city, so many choices.
I have no advice for you. I have to set the alarm to get up at 11:45pm so I can ring in the New Year. I call friends and family at 12:01am.
Then while my husband is fast asleep I go out on my front porch and watch the fireworks from across the river in Philadelphia and the fireworks my neighbors set off.
Then at 12:07am I’m in bed.
Snooze.

I sure do wish I could join you guys in your celebration. I will be stuck here possibly in Hotlanta at a dance party. Oh well, could be worse (staying at home!) Ciao!

New Year’s is always such a terrible anticlimax. All that buildup and then the clock chimes and you kiss whoever is nearest and then…. you go home.
Bah.

finy: Of course I don’t mind! I actually really really appreciate it. I hadn’t even considered the whole transportation issue; definitely something to think about …
Darwin: I thought about Times Square, too, but every New Yorker tells me to avoid the area like its the plague that evening. We’ll see. It might turn out to be one of those things that I do once, just to have the experience, you know? … And, what’s this about you working?!?!? GO OUT AND PARTY!!! :)
Hanuman: I didn’t really like the first Bollywood flick or two that I saw, but the genre has really grown on me. Now, I’m a fan!
goldennib: If by “exciting” you mean “up to your eyeballs in student loan and credit card debt, never having any extra cash, living in closet and not getting any ass on a regular basis” then, yeah, you’re right. ;)
Tonito Bandito: Ooooh Atlanta? I like Atlanta!! If I were to move down south again, Atlanta would be one of the cities that I would consider. The weather will be better down there than it is up here.
Jay: I think the Anticlimax Factor was what spurred me on to begin throwing NYE parties at my own place. Because, at the very least, I knew I’d have great time with my own friends around me. And, at the end of the night, I wouldn’t have to travel more than 5-10 feet when I was ready to go to bed.

DO NOT GO TO TIMES SQUARE!! Try to get invited to a private party. Restaurant parties have always been a win with me. Otherwise tickets will be $80.
I’m spending NYE away from Ny for a change. I’m having a toga party in SF!

Well I would but theres no big group of people here I can actually go out with and do stuff, all my pals in England seems to have other plans which sound really boring to me! You’re really lucky all your pals can make it up there to see you! Well maybe something will turn up, fingers crossed!
You have to go to Times Sq just to say you’ve been at least. It’s one of those things you HAVE to do!

Hah same here. still have to make plans, but it will prolly be another lonesome old years eve for me :|

Anhoni Patel: Toga party in SF? That sounds like FUN!!!
Darwin: It’s still pretty early. I’m sure that more plans will shake out as NYE draws nearer.
Papigiulio: Eat PLENTY of oliebollen; it will bring you good luck!! :) Well, that stuff or black-eyed peas. (It’s a southern thing.)

DC is great fun! If you’re going there, you’re sure to have a blast.

New Year’s Eve, possibly the most overhyped holiday ever. I haven’t a clue what I’m doing as I hate that night with a passion. I will probably end up in someone’s house drinking various variations of Sex on the Beach in order not to remember the evening.
December 12th, 2005 at 9:44 am
Sheesh, quite a few of you are NYE-haters! :)
December 12th, 2005 at 1:51 pm
Ooof…NYE is so tough in NYC! You’re right: book FAST. Prices are already doubling and stuff will be outright gone by the 19th. Clubs aren’t really my thing, but all the girls at work book tables at mid-range untrendy clubs that offer guaranteed cocktail service, apps and open bar. You know the clubs I mean. Small stuff in the 20’s, 30’s and 50’s on the East side. Tables run like $150 pp (really not that bad, if you think on it: booze, dj, food, dancing, champagne toast) but they’re already hitting $200.
Me, I’m working. Blecch. Although there’s always the shot of being the nurse for the first baby born in the New Year!

It will be really cool if you get to be the nurse for the first baby born in the New Year!!!!
