Smiles Ahead

March 16th, 2006 Posted in Emotions, Happiness

Did you know that Fake Smiles and Real Smiles are delivered by different parts of your brain? Fake Smiles come from the “conscious” part and Real Smiles are triggered by the part that processes emotions. Wanna play a game that tests your ability to tell the difference between a real and a fake smile? Click here. Now, back to the Funky Brown Chick … Yesterday. It is my lucky day. Starting with the second that I exit my apartment, I receive three pieces of happy news.

Smile #1. A couple of months ago, I feel increasingly stressed out by a situation at my job. (I said “it’s personal” because I never blog about work.) So, to explore other options, I apply for an executive/part-time professional degree program at a prestigious university here in New York City. Weeelll … I got in! This fall, I’ll take evening courses that will put me on the right track to start my own non-profit in a field that I love.

Smile #2. I’m online searching for jobs. And, then, I see it: My Dream Job. Great position. Great organization. Great, possibly, boss. I may have struck gold. I head to Midtown Manhattan to hand-deliver a fresh copy of my resume and cover letter. Chances are slim, but, man you don’t even know … just dreaming of this job makes me happy.

Smile #3. My sister, Sophie, is coming to spend a few days in New York with me next week. No one could possibly have more love for their sibling than I do for my sister.

So, today is a day for smiles and happiness. Tell me, what good things are going on in your world right now?

Visits and jobs and school, oh my! Big smiles all around! I love that “Wow I want that job” feeling! It’s been awhile.

It’s about time you had some smiley time, lady!

As for me, I’m putting things in motion for smiles on my end too. I may seriously be moving. Haven’t moved in 11 years. Haven’t moved out of this city ever. It’s a long way off, but planning it is fun and it’s scary and exciting all at the same time. Makes me feel like a grown up!

To add extra smiles to your day, enjoy a Sunkist orange soda or a Yoo Hoo. it’s impossible not to smile when drinking these. Also martinis…but it’s not noon yet.

    Have fun with your Sis!

  2. surly girl Says:

it’s my birthday and i am going to get righteously drunk on pints of lager later and then have riotous, noisy sex.

    so it’s all good, really.

  3. Tonito Bandito Says:

I am going to a fun St Paddy’s Day bash tomorrow night so I am smiling about that today. Mwah!

  4. stolie Says:

missbhavens: Thanks for the Sunkist idea; I haven’t had one of those in AGES!! I’m going to Bro’s in a bit; I’ll pick one up at Associated on the way … And, MOVING?!?!?! Okay, I have to head over to your blog right now to see if there are any juicy details!!

surly girl: HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADY!!! Since I’m neither drinking nor having sex at the moment, kick back a few extra pints and scream a little louder for me. :)

Tonito Bandito: I LOVE ST. PADDY’S DAY, TOO!!! (I’m going to the parade in the morning, an interview in the afternoon, and then out with friends in the evening.)

Who else has smiles to share?

  5. AWE Says:

Glad to hear the good news, you have been needing some.

The only thing I can smile about right now is the fact that I am not coughing at the moment. Colds Suck!

  6. MamaChristy Says:

I’m smiling because you’re smiling and missbhavens is right; you deserve some time to smile!

I’m smiling because they put the wood floors in my house yesterday. Now all of the flooring is in except for the carpet and a crew of dudes could knock that out in a day. My house may actually be ready by the end of the month like they said! Horray!

Oh, and of course, J and the boy. They make me smile all the time.

  7. Darwin Says:

Thats excellent news! Bout time too…

With regard to me, a big fat zero at the moment. I had a presentation this week and I kinda did okay on that (the guy was smoking crack I reckon cuz he came up with a ‘almost flawless!’ as feedback) so thats been the only high I;ve had for a long time now…

  8. stolie Says:

AWE: Oh, sweetie, I’m sorry to hear that you aren’t feeling well. I think it’s the weather. I’m not sure where you are, but many regions of the country have experienced huge temperature swings. 30 one day 70 the next and 20 the next. It’s not good for the immune system. I hope you feel better soon!!! Just in case, maybe you should drink a Sunkist too? (By the way, I’m a lurker on your blog — I think the gas prices shot up because the US just launched Gulf War, Part XXVI)

MamaChristy: THANKS! Yeah, I was starting to get down a bit because it seemed like my luck kept getting worse and worse. But, it looks like things are turning around. By the way, CONGRATS on your home!!! It sounds like it’s going to be done in no time. And, that’s sweet that J and the boy make you smile. Seeee, today *IS* a happy day. :)

Darwin: That’s great that you did well on your presentation!!! When things aren’t going well, it’s the small achievements that kind of give you hope that good luck is just around the corner, right? :D

  9. Dear Lovey Heart Says:

  10. Sid Says:

yay on your smile day! Congrats on school and good luck on that job! Glad to hear your sis is coming, too. Have good times in the city!

  11. ET Says:

It was Sunny today – Big SMILE
I’ve got friends like you, MamaChristy that give me smiles all the time.

Smiling FOR YOU…. congrats on all the good news. We should prob chat sometime about non-profits – tis a fab place to be…. esp for those of us who have a near & dear place in our hearts for them.

Smiling because I’m tired of frowning at the pc – I can’t get my blog to publish…..

    Cheers!

  12. stolie Says:

Dear Lovey Heart: Your sister is coming to visit, too? It’s like Sister Weekend!! :)

Sid: Thanks on all of the congrats. I can’t WAIT to see Sophie again. :)

ET: I love sunny days. I think I was supposed to be born in Hawai’i or somewhere else equally as magical and tropical … Oooh, I would *love* to “chat non-profit” with you. I’m not starting until the fall, so I’ve got a little while to think about everything.

  13. Clearlykels Says:

I am smiling because I got most of the fake smile/ real smile quiz correct.
I am smiling because it is Friday and I love the weekends.
I am smiling because life is good and there is no reason not to.

  14. ET Says:

Sunny Days are the Best (that’s one of the many reasons I live in Texas — another is cowboys in wranglers! VERY BIG SMILE

    Fall it is… c-ya then!

  15. stolie Says:

Clearlykels: CONGRATS on scoring well on the quiz!!! And, you’re right: weekends are great!!

ET: Ah, Wrangler jeans. We don’t have a lot of cowboys in Wranglers here in New York City, but I saw plenty of men in tight Wranglers when I lived in Mississippi. As a little girl growing up in the delta, I even owned several pairs of Wranglers myself. Hmmm … technically, I guess that means my ass has officially been wrangled. ;)
