Pegs! Yeah, I think that adults should try to curb their swearing around kids, however, I LOVE to swear. As an (almost) journalist and a grandwriter du jour, I don’t do it for lack of a vocabulary (didn’t get that master’s degree for nothin’)! Personally, I think the “F bomb” is a great word — it works as a verb, adverb AND an adjective! For better or for worse, these words have a flexibility that other words in the English language don’t have. As far as kids swearing at their teachers, that’s just plain rude, whether they’re saying “fuck off,” “screw you,” or “you suck.” Just a thought.

I, for one, am offended by the foul language I hear in very public places: coffee houses, public transportation, grocery stores, etc. People swear because they lack the appropriate vocabulary to properly express the state of their emotions.

What does this teach our children (America’s children, even if you don’t have your own)? They come to school and swear at their teachers. They don’t see a need to expand their vocabulary because they can just use “fuck” or some version of the word to substitute for anything they want.

It’s a shame.

Back in the 80s a comedian spoke on A&E’s Evening at the Improv. He said he had a friend who was taking a cultural anthro class during the time the Brits were giving the Argentinians a pasting over the Falkland Islands.

The guy heard Falkland Islands and, being from Brooklyn, said “‘Scuse me professah, what fawkin’ islands you talkin’ about?”
