Shhhh … You’re Invited to My “Debut”

August 14th, 2006 Posted in Blogging

None of the 8 million residents of New York City know this news yet — I want you guys to be the first to hear it. Mark your calendars, my sweet little darlings! It looks like yours truly is gonna be included in the lineup of the Pink Slips, You’re Fired!” show at 8:00pm on Wednesday, September 20, at The Bowery Poetry Club. You’re invited! (It’s more than a month away so mark your calendars now to save the date.) The event is part of the WYSIWYG Talent Show. If you don’t live in New York, you’re probably wondering: what the hell is the WYSIWYG Talent Show? Well, the people who organize WYSIWYG call it “a monthly showcase for the oft-overlooked genius of bloggers living in or visiting New York City.” And, basically, this is what happens at these events: people buy drinks, they listen to bloggers read really funny stories from their blogs, they laugh, they buy more drinks, and then they go home. Past participants / performers include American Idol snubee Amnesia Sparkles, Guy Brighton, Odd Todd, Project Runway’s Diana Eng, The Assimilated Negro and others.

If you live in (or will be visiting) New York, I wanna see you on September 20! This will be my “artistic debut” of sorts; I’ve never really done any kind of public performance art whatsoever. Okay, wait a minute … that’s a lie … Technically, my artistic debut happened when I was 11-years-old and I got picked to sing the solo of “My Lord What a Morning” in my Mississippi grade school choir. But, still, this is my first “gig” since then. Oh … wait … okay, so, that’s a lie too because I kinda sorta did a one-time fluke thing on a MTV game show with Jenny McCarthy but that was ages ago … oh … wait a minute … there was also that Price is Right gig … okay, okay, fuck it, I admit it — I’m a total attention whore who eats up every opportunity available to appear before an audience. So, yeah, hope to see you there!

That is sooooo cool! I can’t wait to see it! And you! That is so much better than my blog readings which aren’t taped nor are they put on the Internet. VERY cool.

  2. Darwin Says:

That is so cool! I don’t know the others but TAN is hilarious and I’ve heard him mention it before.

I’m so jealous that its in NY! Bring it to England!

  3. stolie | The Funky Brown Chick Says:

Howard: I’m must be a total geek because I’m actually really excited about it. I’m nervous as hell, but I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. I can’t wait to meet the other people in the group.

Darwin: Believe it or not, I’d never heard of TAN until you recommended him a while back. Now, I’m totally hooked on his blog and I’ve added him to my Bloglines short list. (You’re on my list, too, sweetie!)

  4. AmyD Says:

Oh PLEASE tell me you weren’t lying about the Price is Right gig! You’re my hero! Hahahaaa! Loved the visual of you jumping up in down in a matching undie get-up (hey, it’s your own fault for only sharing pics of yourself in your skivies), running down the winners aisle to say hello to Bob with his phallic microphone. ;o)

Have fun with your blog debut! Wish I could be there, but I’ll make it another time, and hopefully we can grab drinks aplenty then to make up for it. Break a leg! Hee hee!

  5. Mitch Says:

    Hey there!

Just got back from Vacation, and now I’m wishing I was headed to NY to see you on stage!

    WAY TO GO!!!

We all want a full report!

  6. Papigiulio Says:

omg reading in front of people from your own blog?? I couldn’t do that. besides my blog contains boring crap I dont want to make the audience fall asleep :P

  7. MamaChristy Says:

Righteous, babe! Be warned, they might just out you, Miss Be-careful-of-the-crazy-people-in-the-computer blogger! Of course, based on this post I can see why you might be a little concerned. I can’t wait to hear all about it!

  8. kypris Says:

Ohh, now I wish I lived in NY so I could come watch! Actually, I wish you and that show were in Vancouver, instead – now wouldn’t that be nice? ;)

  9. stolie | The Funky Brown Chick Says:

AmyD: I’m sooo not lying about any of it … the solo, Jenny McCarthy, Bob Barker. It’s all true. About the Price is Right, I was in the front row and when the show aired, you could see me screaming, “higher, higher, higher,” as the people placed their bids. It was GREAT!!! :) … And, yes, DRINKS whenever you visit New York.

Mitch: WELCOME BACK!!! :) I lurked your blog for a couple of days. Glad to hear that things went well with the girl. And, yes, I’m definitely gonna give you all the full report after the performance. Actually, I know they’ve taped a few of the previous shows and made them available online via streaming video. I’ll ask if they’re doing the same for the next show.

Papigiulio: Your blog is *NOT* boring! :)

MamaChristy: Yeah, freaks love me; hence, the slight paranoia. :)

kypris: Oh, sweetie, I *WISH* that I could do it in Vancouver. I’ve never been to the city, but I’ve heard FABULOUS things about it.

  10. momok Says:

Wow, a chic of many talents.. what’s your number again?? ;-)

I’m really really really far away from NY.. you will have to post us all “unfortunates” a video of you “debut”… Go the funcky brown chick..

  11. Sid Says:

    Congrats!

    *marking calendar*

    I’ll be there.

Oh, and this guy, per our conversation Thursday or Saturday or whenever: http://www.bryanboy.com/

I know, I know, but go, ok? I think you should consider developing a signature pose, too.

  12. stolie | The Funky Brown Chick Says:

momok: Typically, when I’m not at my “day job”, I write, I paint, and I take pictures. Everyone needs a hobby (or two), right?

Sid: YAY!!! I’m sooo thinking of having a Funky Brown Happy Hour before the event. Maybe food + drinks somewhere from 6 – 8 and then we can all head over to the show afterwards … I’ll think about it and come up with a plan soon. Oh, and, by the way, the guy at http://www.bryanboy.com is TOO fabulous. I *LOVE* him!!!

  13. Mel Chickk Says:

Very cool! Wish I could be there.

  14. Tonito Bandito Says:

I so wish I could come for a visit that weekend…. to meet the ultra cool funky brown diva live and in person…. I wish you much applause and standing ovations….

    Mwah!

  15. Meg Says:

I’ll be there, chica. Just name the time and the place for the funky brown hour.

  16. stolie | The Funky Brown Chick Says:

Mel Chickk: If they do the whole “streaming video” thing, I’ll upload it to my blog after the event.

Tonito Bandito: THANK YOU sweetheart!!! :)

Meg: Sure, I’ll let you know if plans develop.

  17. The Assimilated Negro Says:

    mmmm brown chick …

you know, that TAN is hilarious. I just discovered him myself.

not sure if I’ll be able to make it, but it sounds like a great theme/show.

  18. stolie | The Funky Brown Chick Says:

And, yeah, you know, it’s just the word on the street but … I hear he’s not only funny — he’s pretty sexy too.

By the way, you *BETTER* come to my show. :) Didn’t you read my post? It’s simple. If you live in New York, you have to come.

  19. AmyD Says:

    You fucking ROCK, Stolie! :o)

  20. Carlos Says:

Man, what was the name of the Jenny McCarthy MTV game show? Something with a cupid in it? It had that messy-haired dude as a host too, right?

  21. stolie | The Funky Brown Chick Says:

WOW!!! Good memory, kid. You’re totally right, the show’s logo had a fat cupid smoking a cigarette and sitting on top of a heart. It was called … drum roll please …

Singled Out. [Wikipedia, IMDB]. It’s the show that launched Jenny McCarthy’s career as well as Carmen Electra’s.
