More Sexy for Your Eyes and Ears

September 19th, 2006 Posted in Culture (Pop & Otherwise)

Okay, okay, okay … so, all this talk about The WYSIWYG Talent Show has put the idea of “entertainment” on my mind lately. What’s funny? What’s not? What’s good entertainment? What isn’t. So, in light of this, I thought I’d tell you what I’ve been entertaining myself with in recent days …

Movie. If you haven’t seen It’s All Gone Pete Tong yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!!! It’s HILARIOUS!!! It’s a Canadian film about a British DJ that takes place in Spain. What’s more? The DJ is going deaf. Yep, a deaf DJ. It sounds a lot quirkier than it actually is. But, trust me — if you love music, you should see this film.

TV. Really, I mean, who DOESN’T watch Entourage?!?! I usually don’t watch television, because I kicked the box a couple of years back. But, I’m a film buff. And, I’m a hardcore Netflix junkie. So, when the gods over at Netflix recommended this series to me on DVD several months ago, I obediently added it to my queue. And, I’ve been absolutely hooked ever since!!!

Radio. Women + talk radio = sexy!!!!!! GreenStone Media is the first of its kind. It’s a by women, for women (and men) talk radio station that feature amazingly fabulous women. They’re just starting out, so don’t be freaked out if you haven’t heard of them quite yet. They’re gonna be HUGE. (Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda and other long-standing heavy-hitters are backing the project.) So, if you start listening now … you’ll be ahead of the bandwagon.

Website. Do you live in Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington DC or San Francisco? If so, then you simply must get acquainted with HopStop.com and the man who created it. Basically, you enter the addresses of your starting point and your destination on their website, then HopStop tells you how to get there by foot or public transportation. Great, huh?

Book. Ewwwwwww! Another “OMG-have-you-read” dating book is out. David Zinczenko’s book, Men, Love, and Sex: A Complete User’s Guide for Women, is on everyone’s lips these days. This disturbs me. As we’ve discussed before … I’m a very nosey naturally curious person. It just kills me when EVERYONE is reading something that I haven’t read yet. I wonder, “What do they know that I don’t know?!?!? What secrets of the earth are contained in that book?!?!?!” Usually, the answer is: None, Funky Brown Chick. There are NO secrets of the earth contained in that book. Still, I have to admit: I’m going to read ML&S. Who knows, maybe Mr. Zinczenko will surprise me.

Okay, so that’s what I’ve been doing to entertain myself lately. How about you? Why don’t you scroll up to the header of this post and use the comment section to tell me what YOU’VE been doing to entertain yourself lately … And, fellas, please spare us all from your oh-so-funny jokes about choking your chicken.  ;-)

I prefer to bop my bishop frankly, but will answer your questions one-handed despite that.

Movie Over The Hedge. I comes out on video soon and it’s hilarious. My best friends and I (I’ve turned them into animation geeks, too. Jooooin us!) didn’t think a movie based on a comic strip that seems to have run out of steam would be funny, but it was highly entertaining.

TV “The Venture Bros.” If you haven’t checked this out on Cartoon Network’s [adult swim], you are missing out. Probably the funniest show on TV right now. It’s Johnny Quest on crack. Read my review of it.

Radio What is this radio you speak of? Honestly, I don’t listen to radio anymore. I was in the business for a while and got tired of it.

Website I’m here at my favorite daily read. (Where did this brown stuff on my nose come from?) Otherwise, I do love going to Metacritic to see summary reviews of almost every aspect of entertainment. It’s a great site.

Book Life Of Pi by Yann Martel. I’m really enjoying this story. I started reading when I found out that Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, A Very Long Engagement and my favorite film of all time, Amelie) is doing the movie so I wanted to read it before the film came out next year.

Movie: Hard Candy, 2nd time repeat. Pretty cool movie although boys (understandably!) can’t watch it without cringing!

TV: EVERYONE is on about the Entourage, and now you! I’m going to start downloading it! I’ve been watching old episodes of ‘Whose line is it anyway’ recently.

Radio: I don’t really listen to the radio…

    Website/book: Nothing worth mentioning!

I’ve recently moved so I’ve just been trying to unpack and sort my stuff out. Such fun!

i am totally with you on entourage – it’s such an amazing show! in the realm of TV, I am head over heels in love with nip/tuck. julian mcmahon is so damn hot! also, i’m into british tv as well as trashy tv, so footballers wives is one of my faves along with old episodes of Absolutely Fabulous.

  4. FUNKYBROWNCHICK Says:

Howard: Such a meaty comment … About the radio, it’s all about the podcast and online listening, baby. :) By the way, I haven’t seen Over The Hedge yet but I’ll add it to my Netflix queue. I warn you … I usually don’t like animation. The major exception (does claymation count???) is Chick Run. And, I guess I really liked Finding Nemo, too. Hmmmm … I’ll read your review of Venture Bros when I check blogs later this evening. And, yes, I soooo have to read Life Of Pi.

Darwin: I haven’t seen Hard Candy, but I’ve heard GREAT things about it. And, yes, EVERYONE watches Entourage. I could be wrong, but something tells me that you’d like it, too. Check it out.

tara: Yeah, the British know how to rock the box. My eyeballs **love** to look at Footballer’s Wives!!! I even wrote a post about the show once.

  5. FUNKYBROWNCHICK Says:

Oh yeah … by the way … Tara … BACK OFF!!!! Julian is *MY* man. ;)

  6. MamaChristy Says:

For entertainment for me I have all my blogs and books. I read a ton, but I’m not into a book right now. The Life of Pi is really, really good. It’s obvious yet deep. You can understand the story line without digging into it much, but I think that there is a treasure trove of hidden messages. I’m looking forward to reading it again for the online bookclub that I’m a part of.

I’ve just gotten into playing with Sculpey as well as I’m making Christmas ornaments for J’s co-workers. I think it’s fun, but then I’m a pretty boring low-key kind of gal.

  7. FUNKYBROWNCHICK Says:

Woman, you are anything but boring!!! Sounds like you’re interested in a lot of things. And, I’m soooo looking forward to actively participating in the book club again once life gets back to normal. :)

  8. John Enright Says:

I’m amusing myself playing with HopStop. It gave me some insane directions from my house to my office. But I fiddled with the parameters until it gave me something reasonable.

  9. Howard Says:

Just so you know, Season One of The Venture Bros is on Netflix, too.

How is this for incentive? The big beefy body guard character is seen walking around pitching a tent under a towel in one of the episodes. VERY adult show.

Yes, I know he’s a cartoon character, but he’s still damn hot. Well, I could do without the mullet. :)

  10. FUNKYBROWNCHICK Says:

John Enright: I use it all the time here in New York, and it’s great. :) But, it started here. Because it has only recently branched out, it’ll probably take a little while before the kinks are worked out for the newer cities.

Howard: A mullet?!?!? No thanks. :)

  11. AmyD Says:

Yaaaay! Today is the big day! Break a leg, Stolie! Oh, but really don’t, because I would feel terrible. :o)

    You’re going to be GREAT!

As for what I’ve been doing to entertain myself lately: Packing. Unpacking. Cleaning. Working. Makes you wanna cry from boredom just reading about that, huh? Ha!

  12. Firefly Says:

Okay, so today is the big day…. *drumroll* So sad I’d have to cross an ocean to get to see you, but, so is life… I know you’ll be great, Stolie, so just go ahead and say it as it is. That’s all you need :)

Oh, and most of all: Have a great time!!!

  13. Firefly Says:

aw, no! i forgot my two pence on the entertainment question. well, i’ll try and keep it short – i’m all about books, movies and blogs. i need not explain the blogging, but as for books and movies: i just read ’south of the border, west of the sun’ which is a great book about a not-so-conventional life&love in japan. slightly surreal, but that’s a given with the author (murakami). as for movies: the last two i watched were ‘thank you for smoking’ and ‘perfume’, both great in their own way – the first intensely sarcastic the second simply a very good visual interpretation of a literary masterpiece. okay, that’s just about it :)

break a leg, girl, you’re great!

  14. History Chic Says:

Thanks just what I needed another self-help book to add to my library (which by the way, would put Bridget Jones to shame). I am kind of looking forward to seeing what I can garner out of this one, at least it has an interesting title. Right now I am reading Jane Austen’s guide to dating, which is a fun if not cute read!!!!

I have ordered off Amazon and now just waiting for my pretty brown box to show up :)

  15. MamaChristy Says:

Kick some major funny-bone ass tonight, darling! Mwah!

  16. History Chic Says:

BTW-Good luck tonight and you better let us know how it goes!!!

TV Shows-I like watch everyting on TV almost, so asking me what to watch is pointless. Sometimes I think I watch to much (well my DVR that works overtime thinks so), however….starting in October is Battlestar Galactica and as geeky as this is going to sound (that

  17. FUNKYBROWNCHICK Says:

AmyD: Yeah, today’s the day. I didn’t get a chance to put up a post this morning, but I’ll put one up tomorrow to let you know how it goes / went. I don’t think they ever found anyone to tape it, but you never know … there are still a couple of hours before the show starts. Oh, and, about the moving stuff … Unfortunately, I soooooo know what you mean; I’m in the middle of a move, too.

Firefly: Believe it or not, I’m actually really really nervous. I didn’t think I’d be but I am. Whatever, I’ll press on regardless … About the entertainment … I haven’t seen either of those movies yet, but Thank You for Smoking is in my Netflix queue.

History Chic: I’m addicted to self-help books. With the move, work, and school, I’m not doing any “pleasure” reading, but life will calm down soon, I hope. :)

MamaChristy: THANKS!!!! I still can’t believe I’m going through with it. Details coming up soon …

  18. History Chic Says:

Is a great show) would be great if I could complete a thought, huh? LOL :) Lots of eye candy, fun story lines, and geeky special effects.

  19. FUNKYBROWNCHICK Says:

Heeeey, you slipped one in on me there. Thanks!!! I need all the “good luck” that I can get tonight.

  20. Momok Says:
