If New York City was an ugly & bitchy woman and she got into a fist fight with Chicago (another ugly & bitchy woman) who would win? Hmmmm … this is a difficult question. Chicago vs. New York. This war is much too big to tackle in one post. So, I’ll take it one battle at a time. Today’s battle? Morning subway commutes. Chicago’s subway system, the “L”, is also called the CTA. New York’s subway system is the MTA. Got it? CTA = Chicago. MTA = New York City. Whose subway commute is better? Okay, here we go … To perform this serious & scientific research, I consult the experts: Craigslist Chicago and Craigslist New York. I base my judgments on: (1) riders’ ability to flirt while in transit; (2) the presence of annoying people; (3) safety; and (4) residents’ love for their particular subway system.
Let’s start with flirting. Although Chicagoans flirt on the train just as much as New Yorkers do, New Yorkers have elevated the activity to an art form complete with guidelines and hand signals. Good job MTA riders! New York, 1. Chicago, 0. Next? Annoying people. Although the guys who whack off on the train are indeed annoying, New Yorkers seem to most loathe the oversized people who take up two MTA seats. Chicagoans, on the other hand, have a problem with smelly people–or, as one Craigslister writes, “the great unwashed among us“. Given the choice, I’d rather be squished than have my nostrils assaulted. New York 2, Chicago 0. Speaking of assaults, now let’s talk about safety. While New York’s MTA riders fear getting mugged by strangers, Chicago’s CTA riders actually strive to assault their fellow riders. Hmmm … tough one. Would I rather: (A) have my lunch money taken by strangers or (B) have a fellow rider throttle me for talking on the phone? I’m gonna go with “B”, because I can always use my phone as a weapon and fight back. Hear that Chicagoans? I’m not afraid of you!!! I’m safe. So, that’s a point for Chicago. Wait … wait … that’s actually a point for NEW YORK because … well … um … I said so. New York, 3. Chicago, 0.
From men who sit with their “legs spread as far as ergonomically possible” to women who use their strollers to wedge the subway doors open, it takes all sorts to ride the MTA in New York. Chicago’s subway riders come in an equally wide variety; however, a Chicagoan who penned the most endearing love letter to the CTA won my heart over. Point for Chicago. So, ladies and gentlemen, there we have it: New York wins over Chicago, 3 – 1. So, now, I guess this means that I *HAVE TO* stay in New York forever. ;)

As a native Chicagoian I have to defend my city! I’ve been to NY and the subway is impossible to navigate what with changing directions on weekends and just being… odd. Colors are much more user-friendly and damn if I don’t love the Red Line. And the Clark St. bus, but that’s another part of the CTA, and for another time.
You forgot to score based on timeliness. Are there a lot of delays on the MTA or is it just me? I’ve never been to Chicago so I can’t compare the two…
never ridden CTA, but NY subways are fillllthyyy… they get me where i want to be, and i’m an environmentalist and all, but hey would it kill the mta to spend some of their surplus cleaning up the trains…
I have never been to Chicago but I have been to New York. I have also ridden BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and I would have to say that I think BART is going to win!!! I live in a city that is Big and still only has buses though we did get a monorail system finally :)
I haven’t visited any of your cities yet. I’m planning to though so I’ll have to take all of you at your words. Belfast is not big enough for a subway, the best we have is the Metro bus service. Ah well, at least people over here don’t strive to maim or kill each other, oh wait…ah feck.
you talking about the Sandwich place rite? :-D
El: Okay, okay, you’re right about the weekends. Riding the MTA during the weekend is an “adventure” to say the very least. I used to live on the Red Line when I lived in Chicago (Addison / Boystown). :) I eventually moved to the Blue Line (Wicker Park).
Donna: There are a lot of delays on the MTA. Chicago’s trains are probably on time more than ours.
Distar: Chicago’s train are much much much cleaner.
History Chic: I’ve visited San Francisco before and I rode the BART. But, that was so long ago. San Francisco is BEAUTIFUL!! :)
Nics: Come visit New York!!! :)
Momok: Of course!
“I want to suck your breast” ;)
Heeeeey, so that was YOU the other day?!?!!? ;) Were you one of the Israeli guys or were you the punk kid?
My love of the L (I mean, come ON– transit named after ME? ;) ) is furthur prooved by the fact that instead of looking up a map online to see how far Addison is from where my stop was (Thorndale or Granville, depending) I just got up and looked at the map (the plastic kind from the train… long story.. theivery involved) that’s taped to my filing cabinet.
NYC’s a great place… but Chi-town will always have my heart.
I clicked on you from Anita’s blog and heard your sound bite. You sound like a really fun girl.
El: Chicago is a great city, too. :) Just not as great at NYC. ;)
toby: THANKS! :)
As someone who grew up in Chicago, lived in NY for 2 yrs, and recently returned to Chicago..I can honestly say that BOTH suck. Unless you are riding the 6 train in NY or the Blue line in the Chi. The Metra beats both, and Metro North is a joke.
Very old, not sure if you’ll see, but you’re welcome. I was in Chicago last weekend, 4/20/07 – 4/22/07. Awesome weather, we stayed at the Monaco. Must get back to Chicago soon. Peace out!!
