If you’re ever in New York City for a visit — or, of course, if you all ready live here — you should make a pit stop by a bar / restaurant known as Employees Only. Once, while out partying with a group of friends, Sid recommended this place. (Before that, I’d never heard of it.) Owner operated, Employees Only was originally created for and by bartenders, waitstaff and other folks in the yummy food & drink industry. Check out their website; it has a lot of really cool stuff on there about how and why they got started with the idea for this place. And since we’re on the topic of bars and bartenders …
Some of you sexy little things all ready know that I used to live in London many many years ago. While there, among other things, I was a bartender at this great little pub in Bayswater. It was the first time that I’d ever tended bar. And, I was always kind of intrigued by the strange attraction that I felt with some of the customers … Okay, this is totally a tangent but this thought just occurred to me … If everyone claims to hate the bar scene — and everybody does — why are the bars around the city packed with hot, young single folks all weekend long? What’s that about? I’m really interested to hear your thoughts on the “bar scene” ; please feel free to share them in the comment section. (And, of course, we’ll have an opportunity to chat about all of this together on the next Dating Roadkill. The episode, “Bartending Babes,” airs at 10:00PM EST on Monday.)

BTW, today officially ends our “3-day vacation” together. Hope you enjoyed it. :)

I actually don’t hate the “bar scene”….oh don’t get me wrong, I don’t like getting hit on by sleezy, overbearing, icky guys but I love hanging with friends, grabbing cocktails, and being around people. I think there is something very cool about being in the midst of a crowd of people..it is the energy :)
Can’t wait till Monday night, I will be listening live …right after 24!!! :)
going to bars is not the hated part, i think we hate what goes along with that- the sweaty people, random interruptions of conversations, desperate men who assume all women at a bar are there to meet men (hey i’m married), the overpriced drinks…
I kinda like the bar scene…maybe b/c I’m 21 and haven’t had enough time to hate it…but I kinda like it. So far I just like the change from clubs, where people are extra rude, always want to fight, step on your shoes (which are already killing you from dancing a bit too hard with that guy who was much cuter when he was farther away), and you or someone your with always manages to lose their cell. The people at the various bars I’ve been to overall seem really chill and just out to have a good time.
P.S. I REALLY like bars b/c last time this guy got so drunk and was dancing in the middle by himself on what I concluded was his birthday and throwing around money…My 2 friends and I managed to leave with about $40-$60 each that night after insisting we didn’t pick up a dime when that drunken mess begged for whoever got his money to give it back!
Hey!
I like the bars and lounges, as opposed to clubs and parties… more laid back, more opportunities for conversation, and well, therefore more chances to meet members of the opposite sex – with the intent of eventually eliminated this 2 year draught!
Alas, to the bars I go tomorrow with my friends and we’ll see what happens!!!
In an effort to kick my internet addiction, I haven’t been reading the blogs I link to as much lately – and as a result, I completely missed your to me. I love that you called me out on my little disclaimer there, and I love you, too! And don’t worry, FBC, you don’t cyber-smell. It’s just that my friends tease me about reading blogs that belong to people I don’t know. I gotta think up a better line for that subsection – and work on kicking the Internet habit!
And as to today’s topic: I hate the bar scene too! But, sadly, it can be the only way to meet people sometimes. I’d rather meet them in a more meaningful way… while we’re both doing something we like, i.e. in a group for a certain hobby or while we’re doing volunteer work. But maybe that’s just me!
I don’t know why I can’t do HTML, but I can’t. I meant to link back to this post:

What I just tried to say is: FUCK YOU and never wanna meet any yankee/europrimadonna ever. You just are shit.
wow, that tim is one angry dude.
i HATE the bar scene, but i live in l.a., where every guy is so NOT trying to talk to you/look in your general direction because he is ABSOLULTELY CERTAIN that Janet Jackson/Jennifer Lopez/Beyonce or some vaguely famous soft porn-star/video-ho will walk up to them, buy them a drink and have sex with them right at the bar.
and their homies all have camera phones to commemorize it.
but at least the weather’s nice.
They are all at the bars because they live in hope that it might be the last weekend that they’re single…. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Yours is very cool!
i’m all for the bar scene, but then i have to say that i live in a very user-friendly (european) city when it comes to bars. i guess it’s because there’s tons of students here, so the bars know there’s a clientel out there who’s all to ready and willing to spend money on drinks and all the subsequent, ahm, fun ;) then again, this city is a village – scratch village: a neighbourhood. everybody knows everybody else, and no matter how hard you try to meet some complete stranger, someone in your circle of friends is bound to know him/her from somewhere … so basically the bar scene is just ‘hanging out with friends’, just on a different level.
still, i have to say that everybody who comes to visit agrees that the bar scene in this particular city is something to remember. it’s the inner city flare of century old buildings and new, totally cool bars – or the places that are known secrets and just awesome to be in. prices are okay, and if you know where to go, you’re bound to meet really interesting (or at least hot) people and have a great time. it’s not only the students who are out to have a fun time, everyone who lives here just gets sucked in to the bar scene, becasue the entire city is a bar scene, so it’s all good ;)
I like bars and lounges for gathering with friends for a drink occasionally, but I’m not trying to find myself in them on a regular basis. I’m not interested in the high prices, not finding a place to park/taking unpredictable-somewhat unsavory public transportation late at night, drunk people, and in general…playing “the game.” “The game” is a lot like “the bar scene.” Everybody hates it, but it’s the only thing they know how to do. Personally? I’ll pass.
That was really good! It made me quite jealous of you though! I MUST visit NYC again sometime!
History Chic: Yeah, I know what you mean about the bar scene. I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, the crowds (as long as they aren’t too big) are intoxicating. On the other hand, I get soooo irritated by the “scene”. By the way, I’m glad that you’re tuning in for the live show. You should call in this time! :-)
distar: DITTO everything that you said. The sweaty people, desperate people, etc. etc. are *very* annoying.
cici: Yeah, several years ago, I liked clubs better than bars because clubs were “exciting” and bars were “boring.” Now, I prefer bars over clubs because bars are pleasant and clubs are annoying.
Mitch: END THAT DROUGHT!!!!!! :-)
kyla: No worries. Of the people who read my blog, the vast majority don’t “know” me — we’ve never met. Same goes for the blogs that I read. I subscribe to an absurd amount of blogs bia Bloglines, but I’ve only spoken to and/or met three or four people who blog.
tim73: You said, “HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES WE THE MEN ARE SHIT; ASSHOLES; TOTAL LOSER? YEAH? PAYBACK TIME YOU PRIMADONNAS, GO DRINK LATTE.” Tim, Tim, Tim … you’ve got it all wrong: I drink *soy mochas* not *lattes*!!!! ;-)
susan: I think you’re right. Maybe he needs to drink a few soy mochas to mellow out? ;-)
NML: My blog loves your blog!!!
Firefly: Sounds like a nice town.
Shaz: Agreed. Bars & lounges = me likey. Mega clubs = me no likey.
Darwin: That’s what I’m here for, babes! Singlehandedly spreading the love for NYC throughout the globe . . . :)
