Are Geeky Men Sexy?

January 22nd, 2007 Posted in Manly Mondays, Understanding Men

Happy Manly Monday, everyone!! I hope that you all had a great weekend. And, to get us started off fresh for this brand new week, I thought I’d pose a question that gets the brain matter flowing. I hope you’ve already had your coffee. And, I hope that you’re sitting down for this one. Ready? Okay …

Are geeky men sexy? Sure, it might sound like an easy enough question. But, it’s not. For example, my immediate answer to this question is a resounding: hell no. But, when I dig a little deeper and think really hard about it, I remember something. Or, more appropriately, I remember someone. Did you ever see the show “A Different World” in the early 1990s? Do you remember Dwayne Wayne? Weeeellll . . . brace yourself . . . I have a huge crush on him. Yes, folks, it’s true. I think he’s really sexy. And, he’s a geek. Those multi-colored sweaters that look like a box of crayons on crack cocaine. Those flip-up glasses that quickly double as sunglasses. H-O-T. And, I’m not kidding. He’s my favorite person from that show.

*BUT* . . . just so that there’s no confusion . . . in general, I am NOT attracted to geeky men whatsoever. It’s just, you know, there are a few exceptions. Dwayne Wayne is one of them. And, how about you? Do you find yourself oddly attracted to any particular Geeky Man on this wonderful and glorious Manly Monday?

Be sure to tune in to Dating Roadkill tonight at 10:00PM EST for “Bartending Babes.” After last Friday’s discussion about that wonderful little slice of heaven called Employees Only, I simply *had* to ask one of the sexy bartenders that owns the place to be on the show. So, yeah, Jason Kosmos joins us to talk about the bar scene & dating. Tune in to listen, and then call in to share your thoughts. When the clock below strikes 10PM, you can click the image below it to listen live on BlogTalkRadio.

for some reason, i find geeky men SO attractive. maybe it’s because i’m kind of geeky myself. but there’s something about intellectual, slightly dorky men that’s so appealing. especially since a lot of times they have no idea that they’re cute. i like that. i’ve been with too many arrogant, suave men in the past and i’m starting to appreciate the geeks. oftentimes, they’re the sweetest guys i know.

  2. Darwin Says:

There is the hot geeky look that I’m an absolute sucker for. Think Edward Norton or Seth Cohen off the O.C. (yes I watch it, shhhhh!)

However I DON’T like the arrogant geeks who are really insecure deep inside and try to hide it with an intellectual superiority and look down on you. I confess I have a geeky side myself and I can get along with decent geeks and talk about all kinds of sciency rubbish, but if it’s an arrogant guy trying to impress me with his IQ, that’s a complete turn off.

  3. stefanie Says:

I love the geeky men, but only the appealingly quirky ones, not the outright greasy-headed socially inept loserish ones. You know, if that made any sense.

I do not see the appeal of Dwayne Wayne’s particular brand of geek, but I surely will not judge you for that anyway. To each her own, right? Even Whitley Gilbert caved to his charms eventually.

  4. FairMaiden327 Says:

    Yes, geeky men are sexy.

  5. Donna Says:

I have a long history of dating a full spectrum of geeks, and then I married one. :) Men with a quirky character about them are the only kind I’m attracted to. Bonus points if you are not afraid to share your interest for technology, if you wear eyeglasses, or if you have a gap in your front teeth.

  6. ErrorBoy Says:

So much for my chances with the FBC (might explain her absence last Fri?)

  7. The Original Bro Says:

Stolie, I never knew this about you! Needless to say, I am shocked! :) Am I attracted to geeks? I guess so. I don’t have like, a fetish for them or anything, but I’ve appreciated a geek or two (or three) in my day. And hey, that show “Beauty & the Geek” is one of my favorites!

  8. kyla Says:

Of course they’re sexy! The guy I’m in to right now is geeky in a kind of hidden way: he’s an artist, and he loves computers and DnD, but he is a little embarrassed about it all and only tells people about his artwork. He dresses mostly in black, so he effectively hides his inner geek.

There’s also a guy who comes in all the time to the grocery store where I work, and he always has the geekiest clothes on – bright red knit caps, Spiderman shirts, glasses, etc. He’s cute in the “doesn’t know he’s cute” kinda way that Tara mentioned, and I think he’s totally rad.

  9. MamaChristy Says:

I, too, thought Dwayne Wayne was hot. Brutally so, in fact. I like a borderline geeky guy. Glasses are fine, as is a healthy interest in computers. Poor personal hygiene and social ineptness are not fine. J, my husband, is just this type. Cute and funny, quirky and geeky – a good recipe for a mate because he loves me, is good to me and thinks I’m just too good to be true – even after all these years! Awww! – and is hot in his own way, too.

Go get yourself a geek, girl! I doubt you will be disappointed.

  10. Susan Says:

A personal factoid – I have a long-standing crush on Herbie Hancock. Since i was 5 years old I’ve adored how cool and disciplined and dreamy he was – horn-rimmed glasses, a few freckles across his nose, studious pictures on Blue Note album covers. While my pre-teen girlfriends swooned over Michael Jacksons smile and humongous ‘Fro, I swooned over Herbie’s and that awesome Headhunters’ “Chameleon.” Of course, the epitome of his cool/geek-ness was “Rockit.” I met him at a party a few years back – OMG OMG OMG!!! Still geek-handsome, still wearing the horn-rimmed glasses, still a musical genius.

  11. FUNKY BROWN CHICK Says:

    tara: Geeks *are* sweet! :-)

Darwin: Okay, Edward Norton soooo doesn’t count as a geek. He’s hot! He’s got that “intellectual sexy” thing going on. He’s cute, but he superb acting skills make him hawt. By the way, you said, “I DON’T like the arrogant geeks who are really insecure deep inside and try to hide it with an intellectual superiority and look down on you. Um, if/when you ever come to New York, you may want to completely avoid the neighborhood called Williamsburg. That place is a jackass factory.

stefanie: I’m soooo impressed that you remembered Whitley Gilbert’s full name!!! You rock. Seems like you liked the show, too. A fellow fan of the 90s. Yay!!! :-)

    FairMaiden327: Indeed they are.

Donna: You *DID* marry a geek! And, he’s a great guy. :)

ErrorBoy: Oh, no, that’s not true. I didn’t attend on Friday is because I had a second date with a guy that I met recently. I’m not blogging about it … for now.

The Original Bro: I have FAR too much class to watch Beauty and the Geek. I only watch *quality* television. You know, like, VH1’s “I Love New York” and MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16″. ;-)

kyla: Oooooh, the cute in that “doesn’t know he’s cute” guys are the BEST!!!! :)

MamaChristy: Awwww! That’s so sweet. Your husband sounds really cool. And, you’re right, I should probably go for a geek. I, too, have my geeky sides. It’s be great to find someone that I who can geek out with me.

Susan: Oooooh, yes, Herbie Hancock is sexy!!! I can’t believe you met him at a party!!! That’s great. Maaaan, if I met one of my favorite celebrities, I would probably fall out like Pootie {inside joke for those who caught I Love New York last night}.
