It’s Oscar Time!

February 23rd, 2007 Posted in Culture (Pop & Otherwise)

Below are my guesses for best actor, best actress, best director and best picture. Who do *you* think the winners will be? Use the comment section to place your votes before Sunday night. It might be kind of fun to see which one of us actually guesses correctly across all four categories:

  • Leonardo DiCaprio in “Blood Diamond” (Warner Bros.)
  • Ryan Gosling in “Half Nelson” (THINKFilm)
  • Peter O’Toole in “Venus” (Miramax, Filmfour and UK Film Council)
  • Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness” (Sony Pictures Releasing)
  • Forest Whitaker in “The Last King of Scotland” (Fox Searchlight)

BEST ACTRESS

  • Penélope Cruz in “Volver” (Sony Pictures Classics)
  • Judi Dench in “Notes on a Scandal” (Fox Searchlight)
  • Helen Mirren in “The Queen” (Miramax, Pathé and Granada)
  • Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada” (20th Century Fox)
  • Kate Winslet in “Little Children” (New Line)

  • “The Departed” (Warner Bros.) Martin Scorsese
  • “Letters from Iwo Jima” (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood
  • “The Queen” (Miramax, Pathé and Granada) Stephen Frears

I agree with you on everything except Best Picture. I thought Babel was exhausting and rather pretentious, I wasn’t impressed at all. It’s as if it’s trying really hard to be what Crash was last year.

I loved Little Miss Sunshine but I’m not sure it’ll win. I haven’t seen the others so can’t comment.

  2. Howard Says:

I agree with you on everything except Best Actress. Helen Miren has won 60+ awards for that role — odds are. Even Judi Dench is saying she won’t win and schedule knee surgery for the night of the Oscars. :)

  3. missb Says:

You are approaching this the same way I do: who “should” or who “you’d like to see” win. I have learned my lesson. I’ve lost too much money in Oscar pools rooting for the folks who don’t stand a chance.

Forrest? Love him, and he’s paid his dues and he’s fabulous in everything he does. He has the power to make even the stupiest movies better (Panic Room comes to mind) and I heard his performance was superb (top of my list of movies to see next), but Peter O’Toole is quite old and may not make another film. he needs to squeeze in an Oscar. And he was wonderful in that movie. I vote Pete. If Forest wins it’ll be an awesome upset.

Babel is too weird to win for BP, and the director is not American. The Academy likes to lump the foreigners into one lonely category. I’d love it it they give it to The Queen, and there’s a 50/50 shot there, but I have a bad feeling that Clint will win this because he’s old AND American AND it’s a war movie. The Academy loves war.

    Helen Mirren is a lock.

The Academy is yet again throwing Scorcese a bone with this BD nomination. He is unlikely to win not because the movie wasn’t good, but because he’s made far better films and not won. If this wins him an Oscar it will be a disgrace. Again, I wish for Frears or Inarritu , but fear we’ll get another win for the old cowboy.

I need to place my bets now.

  4. Firefly Says:

sadly, i think i have to second missb… i too have lost horribly on most of my oscar bets and since missb explained it so nicely, i don’t want to bore you with my version which essentially says the same – except maybe one thing: scorcese might get it this time, even if he’s done (much) better, the academy can be cruel like that, and ol’ cowboy clint would still get best p. for ‘letters’ – but this is me guessing again and i’m so horrible at guessing….

  5. Amy Says:

    Whitaker, Scorcese – YEs.
    Mirren will win.

And if Scorcese wins Director, LMS will win picture.

At least that’s my take on it.

BTW, I usually win Oscar pools. lol

  6. Amy Says:

Babel had great buzz at time of Nominations. Its lost it now. Similarly, Eddie Murphy had a lock on Sup Actor a month ago. That has slipped a bit and there is room for Alan Arkin to pull off the upset.

Departed and LMS will win Screenplay awards. Hudson is a lock on Sup Actress.

Check out http://www.hsx.com ’s predictions. They’ve been eerily accurate over past 9 years. :)

  7. ErrorBoy Says:

I did not like Babel (IMHO Crash 2, now even more unlikely events)

I think little miss sunshine will get the best movie pic.

  8. distar Says:

i agree with all your guesses miss, other than best actress. i think it’s mirren’s year.

though weren’t the picks especially in this category totally uninspired?

fyi- i LOVED babel. it has to win best film. esp in a year that we were all voted people of the year, it has the most time pertinent theme. For those who didn’t LOVE it, maybe you just didn’t get it ;)

  9. Nat Says:

OMG; I haven’t seen most of the pictures that are nominated, sth is totally wrong with me! Let’s hope your guesses are right, if so, you’d be named the guru chick, all right?

  10. Pegs Says:

I wouldn’t know. I saw Blood Diamond, The Devil Wears Prada and The Departed. I didn’t see any of the others. I think that disqualifies any opinions I have.

  11. melo Says:

i just saw the oscars and i’m so glad that marty won!!! finally!!! as for “oscar-worthy,” i thought “the departed” was a lot better than his previous two films. thelma shoomaker, the editor for a lot of scorsese’s films also won, which is great because she’s one of my favorite editors. i also haven’t seen most of the films but i did see “babel,” which i found awful. it’s the kind of film that makes me want to shoot myself.

  12. ErrorBoy Says:

For those who have not seen Babel it yet, someone just forwarded me this hot tip: http://movies.tubezoom.com/
