Susan: GREAT comment! :) Here are my thoughts ... I'd feel a bit too guilty to raid the supplies, but I'm 100% with you on everything else (i.e. get everything check out, buy professional clothes and take exciting vacations).

MamaChristy: I *ADORE* you!!!

Felicia: You hit the nail on the head. Everything that you described is exactly what I want.

My guess is a mixture of both.

Creativity on your own time
Stability so that you can be creative in your own time

and finally because you are brilliant. In 2 years you will be able to be stable and creative at the same time (meaning you will be able to support yourself with your creativity...I couldn't type that out right LOL)

I'm betting you choose creativity. Whatever your decision, I want you to be happy with it. :)

As much as I love being creative and sincerely long to make a living with it, in today's world even intermittent stability is a rare and comforting thing. What I do when I'm in a creatively bereft job with bennies:

1) take advantage - of adundant office supplies. I'm a writer, so when I can order an extra toner or mailing envelopes or blank labels, etc., I do.

2) Health insurance, whoo-hoo!!! Get EVERYTHING checked, all prescriptions up-to-date, cavities filled, etc. within the first 30 days if you can. In a related matter, enroll in the 401K and BUY COMPANY STOCK if you can.

3) Wardrobe - stock up on the foundationals, get shoes repaired, coats drycleaned and buy yourself some great, classic suits/shoes - for your creative meetings/go-sees.

4) Live - take a vacation, go to Paris, or better yet Barcelona. and treat your broke friends to dinner, buy 'em gourmet groceries or take them to a ball game/play/concert/whatever. Remember to flirt/fall in love with whomever, wherever, with wild abandon while you're at it.

by the time you get all that done, your creative space in the world will be ready for you to claim it.

C... You follow your dreams, forgo the chance of something stable to pursue what really makes you happy (and stability ain't it).

Stability is overrated. It requires you to abandon your dreams and aspirations for short-term gain, but generally delivers mostly on long-term misery ("if only...").

Every good thing that ever happened/came to me was the result of taking risks and cruising uncharted waters... Bluffing my way into companies, projects and positions. Learning as I go. Asking for help where I was uncomfortable (something a 'sure thing' never requires).

I chose stability 5 years ago and see where it got me! If only...

D. I choose stability to pay for my creativity.

That's what I chose and while I'm busy -- I'm also happy.

Hey - good luck. Either choice could end up as a good decision. Either you bet on creativity, and you're forced to come up with a way to meet your stability goals through another job hunt, or you choose stability, then find that because the job plays so well to your skills, your able to be super-efficient and focus all the energy saved on your creative ventures.

All good either way.

agh. totally don't know what to hope you chose.

I've been in the same dilemma. Was living the life of my dreams a few yrs ago hopping int'l crisis to int'l crisis, living out of a suitcase, and working a dream job. w.o stability.

Now hithced, in nyc, and working a very stabile, yet boring job. Stability is nice in one sense, but knowing there is more out there in the world..... I wish I were more entrepreneurial so I could set up my own gig and have the best of both worlds.

Does that make any sense?
