Found a 500GB western digital hard drive for about $100 on newegg.com. It's an easy repair that you can do yourself. Before you buy anything though, do this: open the laptop, pull out the hard drive and see who the manufacturer is. Find their warranty check page.  There's an off chance that the drive is still under manufacturer's warranty. Some Western Digital drives, for example, have 3 year warranties. If it is, you can send it in to the company for a replacement. Depending on what kind of laptop you have, you may not need tools. But you can pick up a computer tool kit for $25.
