Beckham: Hypeworthy or Overrated Pretty-Boy?
A couple of days ago, I could be found standing on the corner of 34th and Broadway waving my first in the air like a crazed lunatic while screaming, “Damn you, Trent Vanegas!! Damn you!” Now, don’t get my wrong. I’ve got nothing but love in my heart for heart for Trent. I mean, really, how could you not adore the sexy mind behind Pink Is the New Blog? Hmm … So, if it’s not anger that I feel for Trent, what is it? Well, quite frankly, it’s jealously. I’m oozing with jealousy over the fact that Trent got TWO FREE TICKETS to see David Beckham play in his LA Galaxy debut game this Saturday. Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! But, you know what? You’ve gotta love Trent because he’s actually taking one of his lucky readers with him to the game. Will it be you? I don’t know. If you live in (or have the money to fly to) LA, enter the contest to win the ticket.
Ah, what’s next here on the blog today? Oh, yes, that’s right. It’s Monday. And, as you may know, Mondays are always Manly around here at FUNKYBROWNCHICK.com. Today’s manly pick is none other than … drum roll, please … David Beckham. Now that he has safely arrived in the US, he’s officially a US resident. He’s on the news. He’s out and about in LA. He’s on the cover of W Magazine *and* Sports Illustrated. But, is he worth all of this hype? Around this time last year, in a post called Soccer and Other “Eurofaggy” Things, I said: “What we, us, the American soccer fans need is a super-fabulous all-American star to make the sport sexy.” If it’s sexy that the American people need, David Beckham has certainly come to bring it. But, does he have what it takes to make soccer sexy to American audiences? I’d love to hear your opinion. Tell me: Is David Beckham worth all of the hype, or is he just another overpaid, overrated pretty-boy athlete?

He’s going to be a big bust. He might make the Galaxy (or whatever lame name the team he is going to play for has, because let’s face it, soccer teams have the WORST names ever) some extra dough, perhaps even enough to cover his massive contract, but I don’t think anything can make Americans give a crap about soccer…
(And for the record, I think both him and his wife are ugly.)

overhyped!! Americans will face it soon. But maybe who knows he will make the galxy whatevers famous by scoring a shitload of goals. Fact remains US soccer teams don’t have the same skilsl as the Europeans.
I wish him goodluck tho, the boy is alrite, just overpopular!!

Hi FBC The Beckhams are OVERHYPED and soo OVER!!! good riddance you can have them America!!
Plus talk about trying too hard!! the W ‘photoshop’ spread is sooo laughable!

well, I don’t know much about Becks skills except that he seems to be really great. I’m not a big soccer fan, but perhaps he can do something for the sport in the U.S. Let’s just hope that “something” isn’t riots in the streets over a game. We’ve had enough of that.
Photoshopped or not, the spread in W was awesomely hot. Great looking people nearly naked? Not a bad thing, not at all. And you know that Becks has got to have a great bod since he’s a superstar athlete. I also liked seeing that he has his kiddos names’ tattooed on his back. Sensitive yet sexy.

Mindspin: OMG, you’re a soccer hater???? :-) If you haven’t seen the movie “Once in A Lifetime” yet, check it out. It might convert you to a soccer fan. Remember when I interviewed that guy Fisher Stevens who produced and co-directed the movie “Crazy Love”? His company produced “Once in a Lifetime” too. Great flick!
Papigiulio: I wish him luck, too! And, I’m with you 100% on the high-goal scoring. I think he’s going to perform really well.
N: I hope the Beckhams stay here forever! I’m such a junkie for sexy stars, pop culture and soccer. All that stuff collided with the Beckhams’ arrival in the US. It was almost too much. Am I a loser if I admit that I soooo can’t wait to see the Victoria Beckham show tonight!!!
MamaChristy: The W spread was hot, wasn’t it??? I rarely read that mag, but I ran out to pick up a copy of it the minute that I heard they were on the cover. And, you’re on to something with that “sensitive yet sexy” stuff. David Beckham is definitely bringing the sexy (and the sensitive).
Any other votes out there? Beckham: Hypeworthy or Overrated?

Meh…
Personally, I’d think he was much sexier if I knew he had better taste in women. *Ick*

“Personally, I don’t like any sport where you can’t use your hands.”
(Ah, Coming To America gave us so much…)

What is this “soccer” you mention? And I thought “Beck’s” was an imported beer.
So tell me again why I should give a green shit about this apparently newsworthy event?
July 16th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
AmyD: Yeah, *CLEARLY* the man has pitiful taste in women. Hello! Didn’t anyone ever tell this man that Funky Brown Chick is oh-so-single in New York!! Hmm … then again … I guess it could never work between us, that whole bi-coastal, east-coast-west-coast rivalry thing would just be too difficult to overcome.
Mindspin: I *love* that movie!!!! Definitely one of Eddie Murphy’s finest. That and his stint on SNL.

Hate to say it: O.Ver.Rated. Nobody in the US gives a crap about soccer. I’ll admit this is a crying shame. A pathetic, xenophobic, arrogant, crying shame on our part. But it is true. Even fewer give a crap about the two of them as a celebrity couple.
How much money did they pay him? Wasted.

I don’t think any European import is going to make soccer sexy for Americans. We just don’t care that much about the sport.
But Beckham? Oh dear lord that man is delicious!
As my friend says, I’d lick him dirty in a minute!
July 18th, 2007 at 12:21 am
i like the sport, love to see a great game, and here in LA we don’t have an NFL team – so any futbol is better than none. i’m hoping Becks will succeed here, but all the media hype is worse than the smog – i’m looking forward to seeing him playing the game, being a solid teammate, bottom line that’s what it’s all about.
posh needs to realize that the trannies on Hollywood Blvd. who impersonate are far nicer and more entertaining than her – she needs to get over herself with a quickness, she can be replaced.

missb: Man oh man, what would it take to get folks all excited about soccer in this country?!??!?! Tell me, and I’ll do it!
kbarrett: But, we *used to* care about soccer. Check out that movie “Once in a Lifetime”. What can we do to get that back??? :-) By the way, *LOVE* the “I’d lick him dirty in a minute!” comment.
susan: Are there seriously Posh-look-alike transpeople on Hollywood Blvd? That’s great!!! :)
July 20th, 2007 at 1:08 am
FBC, there are ultra-tranny-look-a-like-trannies on Hollywierd Blvd. – all wearing more foundations (face and body) in one night that I’d use in 5 years. I saw “Queen Latifah in Hairspray” sashaying out of the WeHo Tar-jay yesterday afternoon. Fiyah!!!

I soooo miss LA. Not the whole city, mind you. But there are some parts that I really miss. Like, for example, the trannies. LA trannies look so much better than NYC trannies.
