“All my life I’ve wanted to be a gangster.” Scarface. New Jack City. Godfather II. A Bronx Tale. When it comes to movies, most of my favorites are gangster flicks. Maybe it’s because these films tend to be more layered and interesting than films in other genres. Or, maybe it’s because the quotes are so memorable. (”Leave the gun, take the Canoli.”) Or, of course, maybe it’s just because I’m from Chicago — the city that loves gangsters so much that the politicians strive to be just like them. Whatever the case, I’m definitely a fan. So, it’s no surprise that I went to see American Ganger during its opening weekend.

“Based on the life of drug-kingpin-turned-informant, Frank Lucas, who grew up in segregated North Carolina where he watched as his cousin was shot by the Klan for looking at a white girl. He eventually made his way to Harlem where he became a heroin kingpin by traveling to Asia’s Golden Triangle to make connections, shipping heroin back to the US in the coffins of soldiers killed in Vietnam.” Maaaan, GO see this movie if you haven’t already. It’s great. And, not to mention, you’ll be able to stare at that delicious little creature named Denzel Washington for a full 8.5 hours (or however long that fucking film is).

Manly Monday” pick. Believe it or not, the man is going to turn 53 next month!!!! So, what do you think?

Hi, I'm 
now usually I don’t comment on the Manly Monday selections…but i just got out the theater from watching American Gangster and that movie is sick! the truth and very much a powerful tale of the rise to power for black men (no wonder its the title for Jay-Z’s current work, which is also awesome by the way).
but getting back to your Manly Monday selection…I’m a heterosexual man, but I’ll admit that Denzel is a good lookin dude, No Homo (kinda reminds me of my father, another good lookin man…and people say I look like him).
So just to keep some of my street cred back…American Gangster was a hot movie everyone should see it…word
He gets better as time goes on so yes he is still SEXY as all get out.
You know, I was never really attracted to Denzel, but I must say that he looks great for his age.
I don’t know about physical appeal, but I just wanted to say that Washington is perhaps one of the finest actors working today, period. I even like his lesser-known performances, like in “Devil in a Blue Dress,” “Glory” and “Much Ado about Nothing.” (Only Denzel could have the chutzpah to pull off an Italian royal without being, ahem, an Italian royal, and make us forget the role called for an Italian royal at all.)
I like him so much as an actor, I’m willing to forget “The Preacher’s Wife” ever existed.
As for gangsters and gangster films, we’re attracted to them not just because “bad guys” are more interesting characters, but because these people are both amoral and charming, and we are curious how that dichotomy can co-exist.
Denzel is hot. Doesn’t matter how old he is.
American Gangster is a very good film. Very violent, but then which gangster movie isn’t?

@ Andy: He *IS* a great actor. It’s unfortunate that he’s been robed so many times during awards season. (Hello Malcolm X.) And, by the way, it sounds like you’re a fan of gangster flicks, too. You have great taste, my friend. :)
@ Pegs: You thought it was too violent? Man, I thought the last episode of Nip / Tuck was more violent than AG. Bloody nipple clamps? Yuck! :)
