Man With A Deep Voice: “Sounds Sexy” or “Sounds Stupid”?

December 17th, 2007 Posted in Manly Mondays

Welcome to FUNKYBROWNCHICK.com — where the “M” in Monday stands for M-A-N. At the top of each week, we explore circumcision, testosterone and other “manly” subjects. Topic for aujourd’hui? Men with deep voices. Blame YouTube for putting this bug in my ear. I recently stumbled across old Barry White videos on their site. No one can deny that Barry’s deep, sizzling voice enjoys a somewhat universal appeal. There’s something incredibly [for lack of a better word] “manly” about it. But, here’s the thing: if you were to meet a guy who spoke that way every day, would it not begin to sound a little bit silly? Kind of “faux sexy”? It’s like that random guy I met on the street a long time ago. He gave me his number. When I called him, he asked me to hold on for a minute. I did. When he returned to the call, his voice was a few octaves deeper. Silly, right? But, w-w-w-ait. Before we all trash men with really deep voices, let us consider whether or not the alternative extreme — men (i.e. Beckham, Ed Norton, Chris Rock) with higher pitched voices — are better options. I think not. How about you? Are really deep voices automatically sexier than really high pitched voices?

  1. MamaChristy Says:

I think the man and the voice have to fit together. Men who have deep voices (not *fake* deep voices) are sexy as long as it seems to “fit” when you look at them. Some men with higher voices can also be sexy, as long as it seems right.

  2. AmyD Says:

I’ll be the first to admit a deep voice just automatically makes a man seem more “sexy” but he has to be able to back it up with manly ways to keep me interested beyond first hearing him.

  3. Dkzone Says:

I think its more about the first impression. Kinda like when you see someone with glasses and always see them with glasses…..then they look weird without them.

I’m with MamaChristy on the whole body matching the voice thing.

The flipside to it is women with sexy voices who are….well…..for lack of a better word…unsexy.

maybe I spent too much time on phone sex lines =(

  4. Wonderlove Says:

I was never really a fan of Barry’s voice (RIP), I liked Marvin Gaye’s voice, actually Dr.Benjamin Carson sounds like him as well (not to mention the similarity in looks!). I just love a smooth Carribean (sp) accent..not harsh like Buju Banton..I can’t explain it, but that just gets my heart racin’! Common has a sexy voice, too!

  5. Baba Doodlius Says:

    High voices sexy?

    Mike Tyson.

    You be the judge.

  6. Mags Says:

I agree, that the voice needs to match the person. But in general a high-pitched, or just strange sounding voice is a turn-off.

  7. Original B.R.O. Says:

I love, love, LOVE a man with a deep voice. But y’all know I like ‘em REALLY (he-)manly, though! However, even a relatively unsexy guy can climb a few notches if he has a sexy voice. :)

  8. Darwin Says:

I like a deep voice in a singer. Think of Bill Callahan, he gives me goosebumps:) The voice has to match the body though. David Beckham looks fit till he starts talking at which point he sounds like a bit of a pansy (don’t hate me for saying that, you know it’s true!)

  9. funkybrownchick Says:

    # MamaChristy: VERY good point!

    # AmyD: I see a trend here! :) He has to be voice + action. Men with deep voices have to be able to bring it.

    # Dkzone: Believe it or not, I’ve never called a phone sex line.

    # Wonderlove: Accents are nice!

    # Baba Doodlius: You’re funny!!! Okay, so, I didn’t mean *that* high. ;)

    # Mags: Ed Burns has a high-pitched voice. Same with Chris Rock. Somehow it works for them.

    # Original B.R.O.: Sometimes I think the men you date actually REALLY live in Grayskull

    # Darwin: Everyone knows that I love Beckham (and all that is soccer). But, even I think his voice sounds a little too high.

  10. Andy Says:

Not too long ago, at the request of a friend who wanted to hear my voice, I made a recording of myself on Windows Sound Recorder and sent it to her in email. Her response? “I didn’t expect your voice to be so deep. It is, however, a voice I could get used to.”

Um…huh? What, did she think I was a backup singer for Alvin and the Chipmunks?

  11. ErrorBoy Says:

Alas, I’m not blessed with a deep voice. My tape recordings scare me.

Two words re: voice matching body: Chocolate Rain
(I’ll spare you the youtube link)

I do like ’smokey’ voices in women though.

  12. funkybrownchick Says:

@ Andy: I heard your voice on your podcast. I gotta say … I’m not sure why … but I thought it would be higher too. Nice voice.

@ ErrorBoy: I love your voice! :) And, yeah, I’ve seen Choc Rain (and Cherry Choc, too). If you like smokey voices, you should hear me when I have a cold. Demi Moore sounds high-pitched by comparison. I actually had a ex tell me that the sound of my “sick voice” made him hot.

  13. Dkzone Says:

never called a phone sex line ?!?!!

    call one

tell the chick on the line that you like to have sourcream licked from your toes

  14. Grace Says:

I like a deep voice. A friend of mine from public school named David had a really deep voice. When his voice ‘changed’ it got even deeper. So much so that we called him ‘Barry’. You would think that it would sound silly but it was his voice. We got used to it because that was just the pitch he spoke in. But I’ll tell you when David did a presentation in front of the class he always has my attention.

I’m a sucker for a deep voice. I watch Vin Diesel movies not because he can act but because I like to hear him talk. I’ll watch the Pitch Black Trailer just to get a kick out of hearing him say ‘You’re not afraid of the dark are you?’

But the again I just love BASS in general. There is something almost primal about a low rhythm. Like the thumpa thumpa of a heartbeat deep down inside you. I suppose that Angel by Massive Attack is really high on my iTunes Most Played list for that reason.

  15. funkybrownchick Says:

@ Dkzone: Nope, no kidding; I’ve never called. And what’s this about Sourcream licked from your toes?!?! :)

@ Grace: There’s this really hilarious blog about Vin Diesel. If I find the link, I’ll post it here. By the way, you were joking about him knowing how to act, right? ;) What??? I’m kidding! Gotta love Vin.

  16. Bianca Reagan Says:

I was into Ed Norton’s cuteness in Keeping the Faith. I’ve never noticed anything about his voice before. He and Ed Burns need to do a project together.

  17. funkybrownchick Says:

They SHOULD do a movie together. Wonder how that would work. Norton is soooo “West Coast actor”, and Burns is such an East Coast kind of guy. (If you hadn’t already guessed, I’m a total film nerd.)

  18. crazyleprechauns Says:

to me, all white american men seem to have high-pitched voices

  19. funkybrownchick Says:

Heeeey … you’re just bragging about your sexy Irish brogue! ;)

  20. Blake Says:

Well I’m 18 year old white guy and I have a deep voice. I decided to post this because I guess a guy with a deep voice can either attract or scare away girls. I actually get embarrassed with having a deep voice because I feel like an oger and I’m also 6′4″. All in all I think (through my little years of experience) that girls like it, but there are a lot of mixed feelings about it. Also I’m hopefully going into film acting and I feel that not a lot of guys have a deep voice in the industry and I was wondering if you think that a guy with a deep voice could make it in that industry.

  21. funkybrownchick Says:

Doesn’t Hollywood PREFER men with deeper voices? I read somewhere that J. Timberlake doesn’t get a lot of “serious” parts because his voice is too high.

  22. Blake Says:

I didn’t know that. Well thanks for the boost in confidence.

  23. Jordan Says:

i am 14 and i have a really deep voice lol, most people if i talk to them on the phone or w/e before they see me they will think im around 18 all the way up to 40 :\ i am 6″1 and ive had around 3 docs say id be around 6′5. i love having a really deep voice but the thing is i also sound really deppresed when i talk, which i hate :( also lol its hard for people to hear me when i talk since its a lower voice :( PS: i dont fake a voice -.-

  24. Jordan Says:

also i am really shy and quiet so i dont really know if girls like it or not :(

  25. funkybrownchick Says:

    @ Blake: No prob, babes!

@ Jordan: You’ll be fine. And, heeeeeey, sorry but this site is really intended for 18+.

  26. Jordan Says:

oops sorry i just typed in on google 14yr with deep voice and this popped up :( well thx any way

  27. How To Get A Deeper Voice Says:

    Deep Voice = Sexy

  28. alex Says:

you know i have a deep voice and i like using it i feel i have a lot of control with it and also confident with it , it not to deep ,but deep enough

  29. Twanna // FUNKY BROWN CHICK Says:

@ How To Get A Deeper Voice: Yes, indeed, that is a correct equation.

@ alex: Sounds like you have a GREAT voice! :)

  30. SugaryPasta Says:

    Everyone here is retarded.

As long as the voice fits the man[or woman] then it’s all good.

I suggest playing around with WavePad and other voice editor systems if you’re really curious.

  31. SEXICAN_BOI Says:

when i was 15 i used to pray to god everyday to give my a smooth high pitched voice, but god was busy lol, anyway i grew up with this smooth deep voice that a lot of women find very attractive.as a matter of fact every single women, (im not exaggerating ), that i have ever dated love for me to speak smoothly and deeply in to there ears after each date. so i learned to accept this curse as a gift from god.

  32. brittany Says:

I think that it does depend on th body too, they have too match. But to me, I think that a deep voice in a guy is reassuring. It makes the girl feel protected, an safe, too. That’s my opinion on it, but of course my boyfriend has a deep voice, so, I could just be being bias, but I do think that girl’s find them a little more trustworthy, too. I mean, there is a difference between raspy and deep, and deep always seems to be on the loyal side….kind of like the golden retriever of voices 8D

  33. Tom Says:

I have had a very deep voice since jr high and I loathe it. EVERYONE i come into contact with eventually says “You should do radio” or “you should sing”. In high school I had a teacher who made me read in front of the class everyday because she loved hearing me talk. I’m tired enough of it that I intentionally raise my voice when talking to people. Before my voice changed it was an embarassment for being so high, now I wish it was just normal. Every woman I’ve been with has loved it, but it’s wearing to say something and have the whole room stare at you. I’m used to it now so it doesn’t bother me alot, but I still notice.

  34. LM Says:

I’m 22 and have a deep voice with a northern irish accent, seems to put women into a trance i just love it. A good example is when i called a help line for my internet and i got a woman and she got all soft and quiet within a minute and didn’t answer me at one point(your supposed to be at work!). My girlfriend can’t get enough of it either. So yes a deep voice is sexy, and i put it to damn good use.

  35. David Says:

I’m 18 and I have a deep voice. I get annoyed by people frequently because all I hear say is “you should work as the preview guy someday” and stuff. Some girls like it, some girls don’t. But I can tell having a deep voice is something that not everyone own. and it’s nice..
