Sex, Dating and Romance on Tape

Oooh, I’ve already received a few emails about the swag (see post below). Keep ‘em coming, folks! On a totally unrelated note, I have a question for the tech minded among you. As I mentioned yesterday, I’m taking Current TV on a video tour of my sex & dating life. Last week, I filmed my friends and me out and about in the city. This isn’t a reality show, and I’m not trying to be an actress. It’s basically just a more visual, video version of the juicy details behind stories that don’t make it into my blog. Kinda like: “FUNKYBROWNCHICK - The Vlog.” Tons of vloggers out there. I’m just joining their ranks for a month. Okay, so, last week, my little video recorder captured: my friends’ talks about threesomes, discussions about why nice guys get less ass that cocky guys, nights out on the town, and my run in with a (married!) guy with whom I’d shared a former flirtfest. Stunned. “Oh,” I asked him, “you’re married?” Now, here’s where the question comes in. I think I have about 38 short videos that total 1.45 GB in size. I love SmartFTP, but it’s taking too long because the files are too big. YouSendIt.com only lets me send one file at a time, so I’d have to have to repeat the process 37 times. I’ll do that if necessary. Still, I’m just wondering if any of you know a quicker, free way to transfer large files from a computer via email or ftp? (I’m on deadline for an article, and I’ve spent waaaay to much time trying to figure this out.) Any techies out there?

If you need to send the files to yourself, just buy like a 2 gig flash drive, they’re pretty inexpensive and very useful. If you’re trying to send it to someone else, that will not work though.
There was a recent finding that nice guys actually do finish first. I’d have to disagree that cocky guys get more ass… it’s just a different type of ass. And I’d much rather have the ass that goes for nice guys. Smart girls are simply better in bed. =)
File transfer speed will always be limited by your upload speed, so unless you have a dedicated T1 line it will take you a while to upload 1.5 gig. What do you have, DSL? Cable? Those don’t (usually) upload at more than about 400KB/sec, so expect either of those to take a couple hours to upload all that footage regardless of your client software.
What’s the problem with SmartFTP? I would think that would be exactly the tool you’d need for this sort of thing. Do you get timeouts when trying to send that much data? If so you could always try breaking it up into a few chuncks - send 5 clips at a time instead of all 37. Not a perfect solution, but better than having to do each one individually.

Paul and Baba are both right.
First, if you need to blow down a huge amount of data (which, as I’m sure you know, is all video is to your computer), then you could always buy a flash (aka “thumb” aka “USB”) drive and send the drive to the recipient. If that doesn’t work for whatever reason, you’re stuck sending it via the Internet.
And, secondly, as Baba already pointed out, it doesn’t matter how you’re doing it (email, FTP, etc.), the bottleneck is going to be the speed of your connection.

I’ve never tried it, don’t know how good it is, but the site used the magic words: “fast” and, more importantly, “free.”
As for threesomes and nice guys not getting that much ass:
I was once asked by a female friend whether I’d like to join her in a tryst…with another female. The scenarios she presented were…tempting. And I literally couldn’t believe the words coming out of my mouth, but I said no.
Yeah, yeah, I know. There are hundreds or thousands of guys reading this right now who are yelling at their computer screens, “WHAT?! But…WHY?!” Ya know…couldn’t really tell you, except to say that something about it didn’t sit right with me.
As for being nice versus being a jerk? I look at it the same way I look at the nature versus nurture question. The best answer I ever heard was “2/3 nurture, 1/3 nature.” That’s about the right mix for nice guy/jerk, too–”2/3 nice, 1/3 jerk.” ;) Coincidentally, it also works for a lot of mixed drinks…

Andrew- depends on the friend….some friendships are not made for boinking, no matter what the dangly carrot is in front of you.
FBC- have you considered having your own website for file storage and transfer? You still have to upload, but afterward you just send the otherside a link and allow them to download at their leisure.
The otherside to the argument about “nice guys ” getting laid less, is that nice guys aren’t trying to bang anything that moves….thats why they’re nice guys….
are they on DVD yet…… can buy all you print…… ’cause Orange County can use

@ Baba Doodlius: I have DSL, but it’s taking like HOURS to upload. I’ve tried no fewer than three times and it’s just not happening. Once, I tried to FTP and it worked its magic for 6 hours only to time out. Not good. One video took 20 minutes. Doing the math, that would take 12 hours to do all 38 right? There HAS to be an easier way to do this.

Though I suggest you archive videos in the highest/native resolution available, preferably on multiple DVDs or Hard-Drives, I’m pretty sure you don’t want to upload them as such.
To limit upload time I’d ‘resize’ them locally before uploading. Preferred tool depends on platform (Mac/PC) and where you want to post them (Youtube, etc.).
