Sex & the Blog

If you’ve read this blog for a while, you already know I’m a sex, dating and relationships writer in New York City. “Oooh, so you’re like Carrie Bradshaw!!” people often tell me. “Well,” I answer, “not quite.” I don’t live in a huge apartment. I don’t wear Manolo Blahniks. I get my most of my shoes from DSW, and I take shopping tips from the Budget Fashionista. My life in New York is good, but it’s nowhere near as glam as the fictitious writer on the show Sex and the City makes the NYC publishing world out to be.

I’m paid by the word when I do freelance gigs … and that’s when/if I get paid. Seriously, $1/word is an industry standard (e.g. Write a 500-word article, get $500. Write a 1,500-word article, get $1,500). So, needless to say, like most of the writers I know, I have a day gig to pay the bills while I spend my nights and weekends cranking out articles. I write because I was born to do it, not because I wanna get rich. I’ve written for Nerve, Lifetime, Gen Art, Fast Company and others. Also, little sprinkles of me have been in Glamour magazine and Time Out New York. (See bio, press and my print, online & video work if you want details.) I’ve gossiped about the boys in my life — or lack thereof — since I was a child. I’ve written about guys in my private journals since I was 14 years old, and I have boxes of dated, bound books to prove it. In high school, I wrote articles for the school newspaper and I was a writer on the yearbook staff. You get the point: I love to write words.

So, I was really happy when NPR asked me to come on one of their shows and talk about dating and general, and this blog in particular. Farai Chideya had me as a guest on News & Notes — a show about African-American life, politics and culture. We talked about my favorite topic: sex & dating. Listen to it now:

By the way, returning to the topic of Sex and the City for a second, it you want a more realistic view of what it feels like for me to put my private life on public, check out any of the following posts: My Family Found My Blog, Should Men Wear Thongs?, Who is More Gangster – Stolie* or the Mouse?, 2 out of 3: Apartment, Boy, Job and New York City 3, Me 0. Game Over? Hardly! Also, for yet another perspective about putting yourself “out there” online, be sure to check out Emily Gould’s essay, Exposed — the new Sunday Times Magazine cover story that picked up 800+ user comments.

NOTE: Before I used my real name online, I was an anonymous blogger called “Stolie.”

I FREAKING LOVE NPR. This year was the first year I donated money. And you know why? Because they have more sex stories like yours. I know its wrong but sex = donations :)

@ Bianca Reagan: Pretty amazing, right? They’ve definitely tapped something.

@ On Meeting Men Online: I’m a huge fan of NPR, too. I started listening when I lived in Florida, and I’ve been checking them out ever since. Aren’t they great?

You’d like Carrie Bradshaw if:

A) She had more than five functioning brain cells.

B) She could write (seriously, can anyone believe people would pay that woman to write down her insights on sex and relationships?).

C) She were even vaguely attractive.

Seriously, don’t let people get away with the Carrie Bradshaw comparisons. You’re smarter, a better writer, and hotter. You’re SO much better than that.

Very nice. I have only recently discovered your blog and I love it. Now why bash Sex and The City? It is just a fantasy but…funny how those fantasies always leave us out???

lamesabassman: Yeah, I love News & Notes. It’s a really smart program and Farai is really doing something really special with the show.

Chris H: You are too sweet!!!! THANK YOU for the kind words. :)

Kali: Thanks for stopping by the site! Just checked yours out, and I love it. :) I’m not bashing Sex and the City; I’m just saying that’s not what my life is like. And, you’re right about being left out of the fantasy.

My blog is all over the place but whenever I write something that contains anything about an even slightly cute boy I get the “oh this is so sex and the city!” comments. It’s not what I’m aiming towards at all but I’ve learned to deal :)

I can’t believe your family found your blog, looks like you handled it with dignity.

Thanks! And, yeah, everything turned out okay with the family stuff. It’s like I mentioned on the show when Farai and I were talking — it’s not their fault I have a blog.

Sista,
I just heard the NPR piece. Your voice was so warm and cute. Too bad your “regulars” don’t get to hear you speak. Great interview. I won’t be on your site, I’m still looking for the blog for African American married couples.
Peace

@ CaliforniaAfrican: THANK YOU for the kind words!! :) I’m hardcore single, and I don’t have a lot of resources for married people *BUT* I really love (African American married couple) Shanda and Fatman Scoop. You might like their show Man and Wife. I’ve met them both. Shanda is AMAZINGLY smart, funny and sweet. Scoop’s cool too, but I think the girls’ night out with Shanda and the rest of us scared him a little bit. ;) If you’re looking for blogs by folks with kids, you might like single dad bloggers like Trey Ellis and African American Dad — the latter whose tagline is one good black father among many. Having said all of that …. One of the things I love about blogs is this: they allow me to peek into the lives of people who may have very little in common with me. Yeah, sure, I read the blogs and follow the Twitter of other black women like friends Abiola and Peggy B. as well as other women I’ve recently met in NYC (like Charlie) and folks I’d love to meet (like Afrobella and too many others to name). Still, I also read blogs by the Angry Aussie), a mom in Texas and a guy named Mitch in Canada. Angry Asian Man is one of my favorite blogs out there, and I’m neither Asian nor a man. :) Damn, I need to do a link-loving “Best of the Blogs” post sometime soon!! (In the meantime, check out my list of sex positive resources.) In any case, I totally respect your decision to not read my blog. So, in case your eyes aren’t reading these words, I’ll send these links to the email address you gave when you posted your comment.

@ lamesabassman: Thanks!!! :)
