Manly, Hot, Asian-American Men

I’m reading today’s Asian Pop piece, Opening the box, by SF Gate columnist Jeff Yang. Great article, but I found part of it somewhat disturbing. It’s not the writer, it’s this chick Susan D he quoted. “I think people overthink and overanalyze the nature of romance.” Okay, okay I agree. “I just think Asian men are beautiful.” Sure, no prob; I’m right there with you sister. BUT, then Susan adds a warning to the folks who aren’t actively seeking to date Asian men. Basically, she’s like too bad, so sad for you because “That just means more men for me!” More for you, Susan? What a greedy little thing. I’m sure what she MEANT to say was, “That just means more men for me AND Funky Brown Chick.” Good thing Susan lives 46 states away from New York City or else faces would be slapped for leaving me out like that. ;)

Other interesting stuff from the article? “[S]tatistics show that ‘Asian man/black woman’ is the least common of all interracial combinations, representing less than 0.01 percent of all marriages in the United States — a total of just 6,000 couples across the entire country.” Change starts at home; I’m ready to be part of the solution.

I didn’t make the clip. The music? Hot. Some of the guys selected for the video? Not so hot. So, I was kinda inspired to create my own (more diverse) homage to Asian American men.

1. Sexy lips Naveen Andrews is the British Indian actor from Lost, 2. Retired NFL wide receiver Johnnie Morton shares African-American and Japanese heritage, 3. Supermodel Tyson Beckford is Chinese and Jamaican, 4. Keanu Reeves is the product of an English mother and American (Hawaiian) father of Chinese, Irish and Portuguese descent, 5. The American / South Korean actor, model, drop of deliciousness called Daniel Henney is too beautiful for words in this commercial with Gwyneth Paltrow ( … and he sings?!?!), 6. Filipino American actor Dante Basco shares my birthyear. Oh, if only we could share more intimate things … and, finally … Lucky #7. Takeshi Kaneshiro is Chinese and Japanese. He’s also sexy and beautiful. By the way, I TOTALLY forgot to include Dustin Nguyen in the image collage above. :( Remember him from 21 Jumpstreet? Keep an eye out; he’s been doing more film stuff lately.

It’s just an Asian man kind of morning. That’s what I get for checking FriendFeed. Efren at 8 Asians referenced that same article in his post Sticky Rice [Asian(-descended) men who love Asian(-descended) men].

I’m also adding Sendhil Ramamurthy of “Heroes” to the list…and Hines Ward of the Steelers who is black and Korean…and this dude I went to high school and his little brother too… and actor John Abraham who is Indian and Iranian.

In other words, I’m also down to solve this lack of Asian man-Black woman relationships … LOL.

I did not know that Keanu Reeves was mixed with anything other than HOT, HOT AND HOT!!! I’ve seen recent pics of him tho… NOT SO HOT! where can a girl in detroit find a hot asian/black man?

Desiree June 18, 2008 at 10:43 am

I’d gobble Naveen Andrews up! That Daniel Henny guy’s pretty cute too.

So, I haven’t seen him lately… but back when I was like 12, I was all about Russell Wong. Sigh.

Keanu Reeves? C’mon, he’s about as Asian as Chung King brand Chicken Chop Suey.

*sigh* I just love the fact that FBC has a ‘blasian’ category.

On Naveen Andrews – I don’t watch Lost. He’s absolutely gorgeous anyway. I’ve only seen him in Kama Sutra: a Tale of Love. Which is a movie that I caught years ago on TV late at night on Showcase (Canada’s vrsion of Showtime) thatI really adore that a lot of people find ridiculous & tacky. Hated the character he played. But he’s so lovely.

On Johnnie Morton – I love football but….Meh.

On Tyson Beckford – He never really did it for me. Honestly he was always a ‘Meh what’s so great about him’ kind of thing. But I will admit in Toni Braxton’s ‘Unbreak My Heart’ video, he’s totally adorable and hot. Especially the scene where he’s doing the Tai Chi

On Keanu Reeves – Bad movies, bad accents, scruffy beards, Indie band, I really don’t care. I will always love Keanu no matter what he does. Plus he’s Canadian.

On Daniel Henney – Never seen him before that commercial. Never heard of Bean Pole before that commercial. But he’s hot. I expect that I will become a total Daniel Henney fangirl when that Wolverine movie comes out.

On Dante Basco – He will always be Rufio to to me. For my 14 year old self – totally hot and still hot. Being that it doesn’t seem that he’s aged at all in the last 10 years.

On Takeshi Kaneshiro – Humina Humina Humina. My desktop wallpaper right now. Can can seduce me in Mandarin, Japanese, Cantonese, Taiwanese, and English. Which is REALLY hot. What did we say about men with accents?

…that is all.

@ tiffany: THANKS for letting me know about Effren. Hadn’t seen that site yet. Added it to my feed reader! :) Oh yeah, Hines Ward? Sexy. John Abraham? O.M.F.G. Love him!! :)

@ DreaD: Yeah, Keanu’s part of the group but you’d never know it. And I sooo know what you mean about recent picture of him. He’s a beautiful vase that’s slowly cracking. I saw his in one of his latest flicks. That cop movie? Street Kings. Keanu did nothing for me. His little sidekick? The white kid? Chris Evans: http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=NIVL6vCErvk. Fuck, that boy was hot! And, don’t even get me started about my love of Common. If Chris and Common were bowls of choc and vanilla ice cream, I’d eat ‘em both up with a spoon him lick ‘em clean. By the way, if you can’t find any hot asian/black men in Detroit, do what all the other Midwestern folks do when they want something different — go to Chicago! :)

@ Desiree: Daniel Henney makes my loins thicken with Desire. :)

@ E: Awww, Russell Wong!! Where has he been hiding???

@ Baba Doodlius: WHAT?!?!!? Chung King brand Chicken Chop Suey isn’t Asian? Oh, come on! What are you gonna say next? Plastic-wrapped fortune cookies aren’t originally from China?!?!?! ;)

@ Grace: OF COURSE I have a Blasian section of the FBC!!! :) http://funkybrownchick.com/tag/blasian/. And, yeah, I’m totally feeling Naveen Andrews. I remember him from the English Patient. There’s this scene where he let down his hair. Is was kinda like Rapunzel in reverse because it made Juliette Binoche’s character TOTALLY fall for him. “Naveen, Naveen. Let down your hair!!” And, OMG I sooooooooooo forgot Tyson was in that video!! Lucky for us, there’s always YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07U_uKGfv48. By the way, since we’re on the top. Y’all know Keanu was in Paula Abdul’s video for “Rush, Rush” right? “ALL I EVER DO IS TALK!!!” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH_AJ4rDdEY OMG. I just watched it again. HILARIOUS!!!! I love Keanu. Dude, I’ve been a fan ever since Bill & Ted’s. EXCELLENT! Ooh, ooh, ooh and Dante Basco. Rufio??? I sooo wasn’t a fan of Hook. Dante will always be “Pam Grier’s son” from Fakin’ da Funk. Oh, yes, I’ve seen every movie under the sun.

TAKESHI KANESHIORO IS A GOD!!!!!!!!!! When I lived in Japan he was on a very popular soap opera and I would run home every day to watch it. My host mom knew she had to tape it for me or I would be comatose for a week. (He’s # 7 on your collage). BTW, what is up with the song on that clip?!

# Carolina Pereira: Ken Watanabe. I think he’s definitely cute, but he doesn’t have that same “sexy factor” that Daniel does.

# pink_thursday: That’s cool you lived in Japan! And, yeah, our little lucky #7 is a hottie! :)

Word.

My friends think I’m CRAZY for loving Asian men…especially Indian guys. It’s good to know that I’m not alone!

I’m curious, though. Do you have any ideas as to *why* Asian man/Black woman is the rarest pairing? I have my own, but it’d be nice to know if you have any input on the subject, Funky Brown!

Loving the homage to Asian American men…I have to confess a bit of an obsession with my fellow Desi Naveen Andrews. I watch Lost so I can watch the guy, prefereably shirtless mmmm :-)…and Daniel Henney is def. one of the finest Asian dudes around. I first saw him in this movie “Seducing Mr. Perfect” (a South Korean romantic comedy that I watched on a cross-Pacific flight like 3 times)!

I think it’s interesting that the article doesn’t really address is the diversity within the Asian-American community. For example, dating WITHIN the pan-Asian community (which ranges from Indian to Chinese to Malaysian) is still rare, I’m a South Asian who happens to be going out with an East Asian guy, and am dealing with the same “interracial dating” issues. interesting thing to think about.

# RG: You are CERTAINLY not alone!! :) And, yeah, I have a few insights re: “*why* Asian man/Black woman is the rarest pairing.” That’s a full blog post, not just a comment. More on that soon.

# Sultana: Naveen Andrews is really sexy!! :) Small correction, Daniel Henney isn’t “one of the finest Asian dudes around” he is THE finest around. ;) And, ooooooh what’s “Seducing Mr. Perfect”? Do I need to sign up with Netflix again and rent that?!?!! And, interesting comment re: the diversity within the Asian-American community. The writer touched on that a little bit in the beginning when he talked about his parents’ discussion. But, I’m sure that topic deserves a full post in its own right.

aww, glad to see m’boyz getting some love. sometimes i get concerned for my little bro b/c he lives in the midwest and their preconceived notions about asian men are a lot stronger that out here in the big city. but apparently he has some ladyfriend he met online and has been “dating” for quite a few months. i think they’re finally meeting in person some time this month. i’m pretty cagey about the whole thing. anyway, next week, i’m going to see a NY Asian Film Fest movie that TK is starring in. woo!

It’s surprising that black women and Asian men don’t date more often. Both groups face a shortage of members of the opposite sex within their own demographic; the obvious solution is to date each other.

Kjen January 18, 2009 at 2:33 am

LOL! To be perfectly and briefly politically incorrect, my cousin and I have always thought Asian guys were so HOT! I’m definitely open to dating them. But here’s the rub, I never have and there are none possibilities on the nearby social horizon. I think the reason was and continues to be the fact that my social circle simply doesn’t put me into contact with wide variety of guys. But, this is the year for change, no?

I am a caucasian woman and have always thought that asian men were beautiful and almost exclusively only date Asian men. If anyone reading this loves looking at Asian men, read _The Lover_ by M. Duras. It’s a quick read, about 97 pages or so. No worries, it’s not a sappy romance novel but about a girl’s story about self discovery, and yes, an Asian man she will never forget.

Hypmommy February 16, 2009 at 11:23 pm

^^^The Lover was one of the few instances where I liked the movie better than the book. Tony Leung Ka-Fai made that movie! He is definitely at the top of my list. I also loved The Joy Luck Club movie because of the guy who played the mean husband of the mom who killed her baby. (I don’t know his name, but he was memorable.)

I JUST finished watching House of Flying Daggers with Takeshi. He could be my knight in shining armor any day!

That scene with Naveen in The English Patient makes me swoon. He was absolutely beautiful with that hair. I liked him in Kama Sutra, but Ramon Tikaram stole the show.

I am a black woman from Detroit, and all of my interracial relationships (3) have been with Asian men…one black/Indian Jamaican, one indian american and one white/Chinese american…my one african american friend married a white/japanese american, and another S. African friend dated an indian man for many years….they broke up, but he eventually married an african american woman….I have been surrounded by asian men black women romances!!!

I met and married an asian guy(vietnamese). We're divorced now and have a ten year old son who sometimes looks more African-american than Vietnamese. We met in college and he grew up more americanized than I did. His parents were very old fashioned in the fact that they didn't get to choose his wife. They did for his sister and I was too outspoken for them to deal with.

Love every last one of the beautiful Asian men. Just scrumptious!! Still I have to ask — what’s with the low marriage statistics with regard to relationships between African-American women and Asian men? Culture?  No… could it be?  After all, Asian-Caucasian relationships are given a second look or consideration (it’s “normal”).

Eh, the high profile guys chosen in your collage and in that clip are still the pretty-boy versus super macho types. No REAL guys (IMO).

Honestly, the concept of a manly, hot, AA man makes me laugh out loud and think ‘if only.’

As an Asian American female who finds herself attracted to guys across most of the globe but still grew up with the AA family wanting AA grandbabies, I have to say, Asian American guys, at least in NYC, mostly suck. They’re either pretty-boy. macho, insecure of where on the AA spectrum they fall, or trying too hard.

It really is rather disappointing.

Daniel Henney’s dad is German and his mom is Korean IIRC. You can currently see him starring the CBS medical drama Three Rivers. And speaking of Asian man/black woman relationships portrayed on television: John Cho (of the Harold & Kumar films) and Gabrielle Union are engaged to be married on the ABC drama FlashForward.
