NYC is very segregated by income and color, so yes, you could conceivably go an entire day and have any meaningful interactions with anyone of color — and by “meaningful” i mean someone other than that dude on the subway, your cabbie, or the chick behind the counter at mcdonald’s.
It never fails – movies like this ALWAYS drop the ball when it comes to capturing the feel of the city. First of all, most of Hollywoods’ pretty boys and pretty girls weren’t born and raised here, so they never seem “NYC” to me in terms of walk and walk. Granted, with the huge influx of out-of-towners in recent years, that may not be an issue any longer.
The second mistake is that these movies that claim to focus on the city as a whole inevitably bust a huge, predictable load all over Manhattan. LAME. It’s the same old stories told time and again.
Third mistake, where are the colored folk? Sidewalks of NYC had Rosario Dawson, but the rest of the cast..? Nothing. Sad.
Regardless of what you think of the content, I think “Kids” is the best movie centered on people living in NYC, as it perfectly captured the chaos that were the teen years during the 90s – -and the kids in the movie were locals. Its hard to fake that old school flav.
all I know is …there had better be a certain joint on 72st and Columbus still..
papaya drinks and hot dogs at 3am after an uptown gig…. killer…. the place is known as the Papaya King….. and if it ain’t…… I… will be…. so crushed…..
on any given night .. that spot was the crossroads of NYC….. word….. the high and low would pass thru….. and during the summer with the Central Park plays and concerts…. when it was over….. you went straight to the Papaya…. Miles, Pryor, Dylan, Newman, Clyde Frasier…. on any given night…. anyone…..and while
those are glimmers to thoughts past….. all I know is……
that there had better be a certain hotdog place on 72st and Columbus still holding it down……
lamesabassman……. think of it as Pink’s , East Coast Division…….
@jeffrey
the girl managed to hold the absolute hunk down for about 3 years!! now that’s talent. i resent the implication that rosario dawson isn’t enough . . . ; )
Dawson is all around righteous, and she gets plenty of geek cred for staring her own comics company. I know this not because I’m a geek, but because I’m well read.
She started her own comics company??? How did I not know this. For a while there, I was *ONLY* interested in her news about that fine ass (ex)boyfriend of hers, Jason Lewis. There were like the hottest couple EVER! :)

Looks good, but I never knew New York had that few black people in it. I guess Saul Williams … Rap artist will have to do.

Meh. How come nobody ever makes a movie about Dubuque?
According to this trailer-New York has become the whitest city in the world.New york i love you too,but don’t front on the flava!
’cause….Mr.D ……. no Nobu…… no Jimmy Choos…… and no Porsches ….. yet…
@ Cecil: I noticed that, too!! :)
@ tiffany: Very interesting comment! By the way, I soooo don’t think NY is super segregated; but, then again, I’m Chicago.
@ Jeffrey Wilson: I really liked Kids. Disturbing as hell, but it seemed WAAAAY realistic.
@ lamesabassman: Papaya King is all over the city now. TONS of those hot dog places around here.
@ aicha: Rosario Dawson rocks! :)
@ Baba Doodlius: But Dubuque’s got that great song, right?? Dubuque, Dubuque, sha la la la la la la la la, Dubuque, Dubuque.
@ Nikki: Yeah, that was kinda strange. I was like, “Wait. Something’s missing!” :)

*ahem*

and … she was killer in Sin City……
lamesabassman…….. and in the 25th Hour…..also
My bad, she didn’t start her own comic company…she co-created a comic mini series.
lamesabassman: And RENT.
Jeffrey Wilson: Ah, okay! :)
that’s the spirit!! look at all this rosario dawson love!!
I’m wondering if there’s a gay storyline in the movie?
# aicha: How could we NOT love her?!?! :)
# timj: Hmmm …. Not sure.
