@ BlackWomenBlowTheTrumpet.blogspot.com: Next year, we might get even more! :) Here are my thoughts about the representation issue … I’ll spend a bit of time on it because it’s important to me.

The 2009 NYC Sex Bloggers Calendar started off as a totally random idea and it came together organically in a really short amount of time with little advanced planning. Tess thought, “Ooh, wouldn’t it be great if we did this?” Then, she made it happen — with the help of a lot of really supportive, dedicated people. With zero forethought, our mismash group of twelve random NYC sex bloggers included: a mix of bisexual and straight women as well as one self-described “queer butch top”; 2 black women; a wide lifespan (20-somethings, 30-somethings, a 40-something and a 50-something); and a bunch of really different body types. It’s a hell of a lot better than a bunch of the other blogger lists I’ve seen floating around online. Google “hottest bloggers” or “top women bloggers” or “top bloggers” or whatever …. ooh, and, let us not forget the initial list of 50 bloggers credentialled to be on the DNC floor included (I think) exactly 0 people of color and probably would’ve remained that way had the Electronic Village not stepped in.

To give Tess and the other peach people who worked on the project credit, I think they were actually really good about diversity. Stacie Joy, the photographer, *insisted* that we only use hairstylists and makeup artists who knew how to style all types of hair and paint all shades of skin. Sinclair Sexsmith redesigned the calendar’s blog header image to include pinup images of Eartha Kitt and other brown lovlies.

I guess, generally speaking, my test for representation is: “Does it *AT LEAST* look like the national average?” (Black women = about 15%). Our group of 12 had 2 black women. Not horrible. That said, (1) New York’s more diverse than the national average and (2) the calendar’s happening again next year, the year after that and so on. There’s always room to make a great thing even better.

Everyone really DOES look fantastic!

Too bad there were not more women of color in this calendar!
