Its based on his world as an 8 year old. Girls are mysteries to boys at this age. No parent would allow their 8 year old to actually date but in 3rd grade its more of a sense of belonging than having a girlfriend in the adult way. I think its healthy for 3rd graders in general to communicate across gender lines and feel comfortable enough to be friends. Recess in 3rd grade should be about playing as a team or group rather than the boys vs the girls. Its important as a parent to set boundaries for kids of any age and as a parent you have to be confident that you have done so. I've seen some VERY "grown" acting kids and have wondered about what kind of parents they must have. BUT I don't consider this young boy to be one of them. He's innocently curious about how girls think. You notice the reason he gave of not falling in love was related to recess in school. Don't take it so serious and literal.
