Kanye West: A Black Man and His Mullet

February 9th, 2009 Posted in Celebrities, Culture (Pop & Otherwise)

Aaah, babies, the competition was stiff!!! I almost picked Ben Brewer, the babydaddy of the nine-month pregnant M.I.A. — who performed at the 51st Grammy Awards, on the day she was due to give birth, wearing only a skimpy polka dot / nylon faux bikini — for the Funky Brown Chick “Manly Monday” selection. But, no, no. It’s not Ben’s turn. I wanted to pick Rihanna’s BREAKIN’ THE LAW, BREAKIN’ THE LAW domestic violence boyfriend Chris Brown, but that story’s too sad. So, for the first time ever, a man’s hair follicles are the winner(s). Behold: The Black Mullet.

Yes. Kanye West. Has. A. Mullet. Um … ladies and gentlemen … I’ll direct you to NahRight exhibits 1a and  4b as well as Complex magazine’s unabridged History of the Black Mullet because, quite frankly, I have no words. None.

I would like to call it right now. He is growing his hair out for a J-curl. I think I may cry if he does.

  2. Kali Says:

Yes, speechless indeed. I noticed the hair and was a bit befuddled but I was seriously distracted by MIA. I appreciate individuality and artistic expression but all this is nullified by poor taste.

That said, I actually liked what she wore on the red carpet. Well, I liked the cut and color, just not the print. I thought that was artistic and interesting and fun and perfect for a pregnancy.

  3. allegra Says:

i’m probably in the minority, but i love the mullet and m.i.a’s amazing get-up.

  4. Baba Doodlius Says:

Does this mean he has to start playing hockey now?

  5. Ms. Understood Says:

Yes I wanted to understand why Kanye West had that hair cut… I think he thinks he is Michael Jackson or something. I also wanted to comment on how M.I.A was overly pregnant and performing like it was ok. Maybe it was ok cause it was her first Grammy’s but I just don’t want every young female out there to think that is the new fashion statement … ” The Pregnant”!

  6. applejess Says:

LOL – Mullet + Person of Colour =
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  7. applejess Says:

PS.. what’s with that ’sexy singles’ ad (hey I know its a way of bringing in the dough) but eek

  8. Gloria Says:

    Mullet + ANYBODY=
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The front looks cool. But the “party in the back” looks ridiculous. I don’t like it.

I was distracted by M.I.A. too. I’ve never seen a pregnant woman perform like that…let alone perform at all.

  9. ieishah Says:

you should start ‘fuckery fridays’ for this particular brand of ridiculousness.

  10. letinstar Says:

    mullets are wrong…that is all…

  11. applejess Says:

I take it back… saw the Grammy’s yesterday (yes in the UK we get everything second-hand), Mr KW real rocked it, sooo thumbs up from me!!

    @ theTerror: J-curl? Kanye. I sooo can’t picture that.

@ Kali: I thought MIA’s outfit was awesome. :) Man, that woman was pregnant and she was in better shape than most people. If you’ve got the body, rock it. :)

@ allegra: I give the mullet a thumbs down, but MIA’s outfit gets a thumbs up.

@ Baba Doodlius: Ahem, not all hockey players have mullets. ;)

@ Ms. Understood: Hmm, I didn’t think of it that way. I kinda thought of it like: “Look, she’s pregnant and she’s still working it out.” Kind of a bold statement like – women can do anything they want, even if pregnant. I thought it was hot. There was a pregnant woman in one of my Chicago kickboxing classes, and that chick could TOTALLY kick most of our asses.

@ Gloria: “Party in the back” – http://www.ilovemullets.com/

    @ ieishah: :)

    @ letinstar: Down with mullets!!

@ applejess: Yeah, I *TOTALLY* loved his performance and I’m a huge Kanye fan. Just not a fan of the hair. He’ll change it soon. Like many great performers, he reinvents himself often.

@ Black Dating: Thanks for the link love.

lamesabassman…… or maybe he just didnt look it the mirror before the gig…

  16. lamesabassman...... Says:

  17. Mahoganydymond™ Says:

My friend guy laughs at me.. I actually like the mullet look on Kanye.. I think people can wear their hair any way they want as long as it is clean… So hey Kanye can rock anything he wants.. He still looks good to me..

  20. For the Shag Says:

If you see, any artist who wants to do a revolution in the music, They should have new hair, exemple Elvis, The Beatles, Micheal Jackson and Doug E. Fresh star the Hi-top fade. But we know thw shag is old but…Its cool!

  21. album 808's and Heartbreak Says:

    808s & Heartbreak…

Kanye West went to classify his new disc as a pop songs, stating his disdain towards the contemporary backlash to the concept of pop music and showed admiration for what some pop stars have accomplished in their lives….
