I Need to Take Better Care of Myself

Relaxation ChairYesterday, to relax me, a woman informed me I need to get out of NYC pronto because the world is ending and Manhattan would be underwater no later than December 2009. Wait. Let me give you a bit of backstory … I have a horrible habit of forgetting to pamper myself. I often skip drinking 8 glasses of water per day. Because it’s cold outside, I’m not running as much as I usually do. And, instead of going to bed at a decent hour, I’ve been staying up late and/or wake up early to work on my book (editing, restructuring, strengthening the arc, etc. etc). I need to take better care of myself. So, as a self-congratulatory treat for finishing the first rough draft of my full typescript, I went with two college friends — Mags and Bro — to get a facial and deep tissue massage. (It’s Spa Week in New York.) The facial was awesome; I soooo want to get another one in the future. The woman who massaged me was chatty, friendly and had really strong hands.

I told her I was originally from the Midwest and I’d only lived in New York for a little more than four years. “I’m not sure how long I’ll stay,” I confessed. “I love the city and I certainly feel more at home here than I ever did in Small Town USA. But, I miss having a roomy apartment, greenspace, family and a lot of other things in Illinois that just seemed, you know, healthier. The people were friendlier … more genuine … in the Midwest.”

Her response? “You need to get out of New York!!” She told me I had “demonic” knots in my back and my body was literally shutting down on me due to my fast pace lifestyle in New York. “Save up your money,” she warned, “and use it to move out of this city. I’ve had visions. This place is going to be underwater by the end of the year anyway. Get out while you still can!!!”

Um, okay. Couple thoughts. First: This shit only happens to me. Of course I go in for a relaxing massage only to be told Satan has taken over my back muscles … and, by the way, the world is ending. Second thing: Yes, I’ve not been taking care of myself lately. But, if I’m not doing that in NYC, it’s likely I’ll not do it in other cities too. I need to shift my paradigm about self-care — not just my address. Third thing: It’s important to note this woman isn’t completely looney. New York Post wrote this article about this National Geographic special about Manhattan succumbing to the seas due to a hurricane. But, whatever. Here’s the lesson I’m going to take away from what the masseuse said …

She told me what I needed to hear. You all saw The Matrix, right? There’s this part where Neo goes to see the Oracle. Right after the bald-headed girl says “there is no spoon,” the Oracle tells Neo he’s not the one. Which, of course, isn’t true. So, Neo tells Morpheus and Morpheus writes it off as: “she told you exactly what you needed to hear.”

Should I leave New York? Does Lucifer have a vulcan death grip on my back muscles? Is Manhattan going to be washed away? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe so. Did that woman TOTALLY FUCKING FREAK ME OUT and cause me to re-evaluate how much I am or am not taking care of myself? Yep. Am I going back to my old habit of making healthier life choices because of it? Absolutely.

Ah, if only it weren’t necessary to constantly “relearn” lessons I already learned ages ago …

I wonder what my back knots are. I'm sure they have an element of hellspawn to them, if the pain they give me is any indication.

Anyhow, good to take care of yourself more. The older you get the less forgiving your body is about long nights out and little sleep. However, you shouldn't be making it a goal to drink 8 glasses of water in order to take care of yourself. See http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp and also remember it's possible to overhydrate. Just drink when you're thirsty, and pick water instead of soda.

I have a habit of ignoring the oddest messages people give me only to have it turn out to be something I should have listened to. I moved to Utah to work on my PhD after EVERYONE warned me not to. I left (read: dropped out) wishing that I had listened in the first place. I did learn some valuable lessons, which is why I'm now working on my memoir. It was a weird path to walk, but I appreciate it now.

Body sensations do tell us a lot too. As for me, they let me know when to re-focus on myself or when to avoid people or situations. (I also have a bad habit of ignoring this too and regretting it later.)

You may have heard what you needed to hear, but what will you do next?

Let's see, you mentioned “The Matirx” and the “Vulcan Death Grip” in the same post. I think I just had a nerdgasm.

Eat some Easter candy, buy some chest waders to prepare for the flood, go have a baxorcism, and enjoy life in NYC!

No this shit just doesn't happen to you. 6 years ago a woman (didn't know her) told me that I should read the Bible because she sees a dark cloud hanging over me. Instead of the fear she expected I had to give HER a little counseling. Where the hell do these nutjobs get off tell people shit like this?

Wow! So the Devil just totally skipped the “GI Joe Kung Fu Grip” and went straight for the “Vulcan Death Grip”?! Damn girl, what have you been doing? :P But seriously, I hope you do get to relax. At least you got the first draft of the book finished, so yay! Go you!

all things happen for a reason….. at times…. it pays to take heed of what's said
to you …. for as Murphy's Law states….. anything can and with happen and at any
moment when you least expected….. stuff will happen….. now to mention both
” The Matrix” and the “Vulcan Death Grip” in the same breath means that you
are well versed in the ways of the Force…. so dwell in the fabric of reason and
check out some prime real estate around say…. Maryland 'cause there bound to
be some beachfront properties up for sale some where around New Year's Day
2010…… or … the Midwest sounds hellacool too….
as to taking better care of yourself…… well … you are all you have at the
moment… and since we all need you around for the next 50 plus years…
so you better start eating your veggies now and avoid the rush….

lamesabassman….. NYC isnt going anywhere… who would take it in… Jersey..?

What am I going to do? Sleep longer hours. Work out more. Extend my self-imposed deadlines for my book. Drink more water … but not necessarily 8 glasses. :) In short, I'll try to be more mindful of my body. I'm usually good at that, but I've been slipping.

I'm SUPER excited about the first draft. That was the hard part — producing a solid 293 pages. Hopefully, the rest of it (editing) will go a lot smoother.

Midwest = Awesome. I prefer living and playing in New York now, but I'm still glad I grew up in Illinois.

there are no quick fixes….. once you realize your limitations, then your
possibilities are endless…. veggies… fish… chicken will keep you strong…
red meat every once and a while… is good for you …. drink red wine with your meals…. and try to have two glasses of red grapefruit juice a day with
the normal 6 to 8 glasses of water a day…. do this and you will feel great..
and when you want to reward yourself to a treat: one cupcake will be fine…
try to get to a gym at least 3 times a week….. and try walking at least twice
a week…. do this and the weight will drop and you will be soooo perky..

lamesabassman…… have been doing this for 10 years and it works…

Maybe you should think about doing some weekends in other places you'd consider living. I thought I was done with NYC last year and made a few trips to places I thought I should move. Turned out it was my life and not my location that was the problem so I stayed and made a plan to move to a different neighborhood instead. But my best friend (whose health was gradually declining, felt depressed and had insomnia) did move to DC and couldn't be happier. It just depends on the person, but I found the on-site exploring really helped.

I'm going to play my “guy card”

1. get more massages——> get rid of knots
2. move to suburbs———-> more space and greenery
3. crazy people need jobs too——> i'm convinced somebody busses them in to work at fast food establishments in my vicinity

But the Oracle's statement was true. Neo wasn't the One till the next time around. He had to die to become The One.
