Relationship Movies: 10 Gay Romantic Comedies

May 30th, 2009 Posted in Culture (Pop & Otherwise), Understanding Men

Given your positive reactions to my Does Guy-on-Guy Action Turn You On? post, I thought I’d give you guys a list of fun rom-coms featuring gay male relationships. Lots of familiar faces here. Tori Spelling!!! Guy Pierce!!! For those of you who like seeing hunky men kiss, the films below provide a bit of yummy eye candy. For those of you who think consenting adult male relationships are wrong, against God’s plan, sick or whatever, if you watch the movies below, you’ll see representations of how healthy, touching, cute, insecure, wacky, difficult, interesting and [gasp!] strikingly “human” relationships between men can be. ;) Movie summaries and taglines below are from IMDB.

Trick. “The misadventures of two young gay men, trying to find a place to be alone, one night in Manhattan.” (IMDB)

Shortbus. “A group of New Yorkers get caught up in their romantic-sexual milieu converge at an underground salon infamous for its blend of art, music, politics, and carnality.”

Kiss Me Guido. “When he answered the ad for a roommate he thought that “GWM” meant… “Guy With Money?”

Camp. “After a series of Broadway flops, songwriter Bert Hanley (Dixon) goes to work at a musical camp for young performers. Inspired by the kids, he finds an opportunity to regain success by staging an altogether new production.”

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. “It’s fun, daring, over-the-top and unforgettable. It’s a road movie with attitude and the occasional frock.”

Mambo Italiano. “The son of Italian immigrants to Canada struggles to find the best way to reveal to his parents that he’s gay.”

Threesome. “Eddy and Stuart share two-thirds of a dormitory suite. Due to bureaucratic error, a woman named Alex is added to their room…”

Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss. “Billy is a gay fine-arts photographer who falls in love with straight coffee-shop waiter Gabriel.”

Another Gay Movie. “Four gay high school friends make a pact to lose their virginity before they go to college.”

Okay, so, maybe that was 9 instead of 10. I’m sure several of you know a rom-com or two that might be great for this list. Share ‘em!! Free free to leave your suggestions in the comments section.

I would add In and Out. It’s the first time (I think) I ever saw two guys kiss on screen. And it’s just a good movie!

  2. Pamela Says:

I like The Object of My Affection, starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. It looks at and questions the idea of family, gender and sexuality. Funny and relevant.

  3. Baba Doodlius Says:

“Priscilla Queen of the Desert” – wow, THAT’S going back a while.  But Hugo Weaving was much better as Agent Smith in “The Matirx”.

you can also add “all over the guy” and “the broken hearts club”to the list…

Oooh, thanks for the tips guys!! :) I’ve seen In and Out, but I missed Object of My Affection, All Over the Guy and The Broken Hearts Club.

SHORTBUS is not a romantic comedy.  It’s basically artsy porn.   I mean, seriously…if you are looking for a romance that just happens to be about gay people, shortbus is the wrong tree to bark up.  Unless you consider threesomes, orgies and public sex “romantic”…

  7. Steve Says:

Have to agree completely that SHORTBUS is anything BUT a romantic comedy. It has nothing to do with either romance or comedy. The writer/director (and one of the extras himself in several of the orgies) said that when he made the film he wanted to show that a story could be integrated in to a movie that featured real (not staged) sex. He also said that “the title SHORTBUS (which can be used as a derogatory term since mentally handicapped people are frequently transported on SHORT BUSES – thus the title) describes the characters in the film. Instead of the traditional mental handicaps, all my (his) characters have emotional handicaps.” So the author/writer/producer/director/star doesn’t even consider his film a romantic comedy.

On the up side…I think one of the funniest romantic comedies is a film called I THINK I DO.  I have watched that many times (something I rarely do with films).  I enjoy it just as much every time.  BTW; a great way to show your straight friends that not every LGBT movie or TV show is about HIV, the death of a partner, etc. Comes as quite a surprise that we actually have movies as well that are just made for pleasure since the only LGBT movies on main stream TV (and characters) are always professing their undying love…then dying!

I also agree that TRICK is definitely right at the top of sweet, romantic comedies…probably tied with I THINK I DO in my #1 spot. Each has its niche; I THINK I DO is a little funnier and TRICK is a little sweeter; great balance for a night in watching movies.

Hope you enjoy the movies and I didn’t preach too much.
