I’m Back

Whenever I asked people, “How was your vacation” and they responded “It was nice, but it’s good to be home” I thought it meant they didn’t like their vacation. I figured, you know, if you liked your travels, you never wanted to come back, right? That’s certainly the way I felt when I lived in Chicago. Back then, I took trips to Greece, Hawai’i and elsewhere. Each time I left I’d think, “I wish I could’ve stayed there.” But, here’s the funny thing … Since, I moved to New York almost five years ago, I’ve been away to Vegas, London, Belfast, Austin, Barbados and (most recently) Utah. With each return to Manhattan, I stick my key in my apartment’s front door, plop my bags on the floor, curl up in my bed and think, “It’s so good to be back.” I think I get it now. When you actually LIKE where you live, you don’t want to abandon it for someplace else. Utah was fabulous. But, still, New York is home.

For me the place would be the Domincan republic, in Punta Cana. I would love to be 25, single and bi-lingual….I would definately get a job there and live.

The only part I like about being home is that my clothing comes from the closet instead of a suitcase, I have all my books available, and I once again have a fully equipped kitchen. If I could travel in luxury, I probably wouldn’t mind being nomadic.

I’ve been to India 11 times, but it wasn’t until that 11th time that I finally understood why, despite all the poverty and destitution, people always seemed reasonably happy with their lot. It was because of the concept of “home”, and how important “home” is to your happiness. Now, when people go on about what the greatest city in the world is, I just think the answer to that is “home”…wherever that may be.

dkzone: I’ve never been to the Dominican Republic.
Nelle: :)
Val D. Parker: It was really beautiful out there!
lamesabassman: I’m a film festival junkie. Haven’t hit Sundance yet, but I’d like to someday. Not sure about this January. Maybe in a couple years. In the next 12 months, I’m considering Scotland, Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and Montreal.
errorboy: Thanks, white boy ;)
A: I did the nomadic thing for a little while (definately not luxuriously, mind you :) It was fun for a while. Then, it was eventually kind of unsettling. As long as it wasn’t home, it always felt like living out of suitcases.
Marcus: Wow, you’ve been to India 11 times? That’s great! :) I haven’t been and, quite frankly, I’m not sure if I would like it. I think seeing that level of poverty would depress me. But, who knows? By the way, love what you said about “the greatest city in the world” being “home…wherever that may be.” Beautifully stated.

I know exactly what you mean! I’ve actually relaxed quite a bit on the traveling, because I realized how much I like just discovering the unknown in the city I’m already in rather than trekking across the nation to do something I could have done right in my own city. Boston’s my home for now, but I felt the same way when I was in LA this summer. I do get the itch to live outside of the U.S. every now and again. First it was Cuba. Then Ghana. France is next!

I love traveling but while away from home, I have that one weak moment where I wish I was Dorothy and could click my heels and could be back in my own bed.

dkzone: Thanks for the tip! I’ve gotta check it out. I haven’t been back to the Caribbean since Barbados, and that was my first trip to the region.
