In Pictures: I’m Not Quite Nude

Photocopy of Photo by Bill Wadman

Okay, so, this doesn’t have anything to do with dating. A little more than a year ago, I did a sitting with Bill Wadman. On the day of the shoot, he gave me an instant pic he took on one of his cameras. That evening, during my train ride home, I tucked it in between the pages of the paperback I was reading. When Bill emailed me digital copies of the photo shoot images, I was sooooo excited about how great the new pictures looked that — because I can be somewhat scattered — I totally forgot about the other pic I already had. Fast forward more than 12 months later. I found it again when I started packing up my books to move from my current apartment to the new place. I can’t believe I forgot about it because It’s one of my favorite photos, and Bill is probably one of the most skilled working photographers I’ve ever met. Given his relatively young age, his talent is truly remarkable. What’s more? He’s sooooo damn sexy! If you’d like to read the interview I did with him for my Nerve magazine column last year, it’s available on my site.

Sexpot Meets Goddess: Drinks with Abiola Abrams

I reject the term “relationships expert” because it sounds silly, and I’m a don’t believe anyone is an expert at relationships. Here’s my theory: if you’re doing it right, you’re a constant work in progress. So, I prefer the title sexpot. I’m a writer | blogger | editor | sexpot who uses the moniker “Funky Brown Chick.” Pressing our lips to glasses filled with margaritas, fellow brown-skinned writer — that goddess Abiola Abrams from BET — and I talked about race, sexuality and what it means to be “black enough” in America today. Read the details when my piece at Nerve magazine is published online later today. And, if you live in New York, drop by Abiola’s 6:00 pm reading tonight at Barnes & Noble at Lincoln Center!!

I’ve got race & sexuality on the brain because I recently read the Racialicious interview with Gawker’s former brown-skinned advice columnist (now at Radar) Tionna Smalls. If you missed the drama, here’s the recap. Gawker hired a black woman whose pieces were flush with grammatical errors, Black Vernacular English and straight-talk lessons learned from “the hood.” Given that Gawker’s audience and writing staff are predominantly white hipsters, people wondered if Tionna’s presence on the scene was a minstrel show. (Read: Who Played Whom? Gawker Media and Tionna Smalls.)

Now, for those who read FUNKYBROWNCHICK.com on a regular basis, you know we usually celebrate Manly Monday at the top of the week. We’ll have Testicle Tuesdays tomorrow instead. Topic? Anderson Cooper’s Sunday night 60 Minutes interview with David Beckham. It was delicious. The Coop and Becks together? Hey, I heard Barack Obama’s speech on race! I’m 100% willing to join that threesome and let the interracial healing begin! ;) Details tomorrow.

My Beautifully Imperfect Dating World

March 6th, 2008 | 10 folks got down with the Funky Brown | Posted in Nerve.com

I’m sitting in my therapist’s office. I tell her about a recent date, and she asks if it’s the same international guy I mentioned during our last session. It’s not. “Sounds like you don’t have any problem meeting men,” she says with raised eyebrows.” She’s right; I don’t. I think it’s the sex factor. A male friend I’ll call Stan once gave me the inside scoop: “Men get the impression that you’re an easy lay because you’re so outgoing and boisterous. Then they quickly realize that you’re not going to sleep with them and that you’re fun but you are actually a really serious person, too.”

Do You Mind If I Show You My Panties?

I’ve got sex on my mind lately because I’m writing a chapter about the topic for a really great anthology. I skipped a party last night, stayed up late and woke up early to work on my piece. It’s like 98% there, but I need another hour or so to get the closing paragraph in really good shape. In addition to working on that, I’m wrapping up a pitch for an unrelated print magazine story. I did an interview for that at 8:00am this morning, and I have two more scheduled in the coming days. Crazy busy. Today on FUNKYBROWNCHICK, I wanted to write a post about my dating life … and recent insights a couple of guy friends have given me about “The Male Perspective on Dating” … but I don’t have time. I’m running out the door, getting ready to head to my day job. So, in lieu of a full funky brown chick post, I hope you’ll forgive me if I simply point you to my recent Nerve piece, “Chipped Red Fingernail Polish and Bill Wadman’s Penis.” Also, if you don’t mind, I’d like to show you this week’s panty posts on “panties210: The Underwear Blog for Men and Women“:

Hope you all have GREAT weekends, and I can’t wait to give you the romance scoop next week!

Flirting on Film

There’s definitely something sexy about sitting in front of a skilled man holding his favorite instrument in hand. I got kinda turned on. Wet. Hot. So I flirted shamelessly (and, of course, 100% harmlessly). But Bill Wadman isn’t turned on at all. He’s just doing his job. He’s a photographer. A damn good one at that. What’s more? Not only does he take great pictures, he’s also a fierce conversationalist. I enjoyed talking to him just as much as I enjoyed looking at his camera.

See more images over at his blog. I’ll write more about the photo shoot — and the juicy details of our intimate conversation — on Nerve later today.

I’m at Nerve Today

At Nerve magazine, I recently wrote a self esteem and body image post called “Breasts & The Pursuit of Perkiness”. Check it out when you get a chance. Admittedly, there are few things *less* manly than boobs. I won’t have a chance to put up the “Manly Monday” post until tomorrow. Hence, we’ll have a “Testicle-Driven Tuesday” this week. In the meantime, be sure to check me out at Nerve and/or panties210 today.

FBC at Nerve.com: Best Sex Ever

January 22nd, 2008 | 9 folks got down with the Funky Brown | Posted in Nerve.com

Who doesn’t love good sex? Rewind to the holiday break. I finally got laid. If you’ve read this blog with any amount of frequency, you know that I’m single. My solo status isn’t the cause of my sexless life. (Hell, there are plenty of married duos who don’t get it on regularly either, right?) So, what gives? Well, truth be told [...]

I’m writing at Nerve today. Tonight, I’m attending the Best Sex Writing 2008 book release party. I interviewed Rachel about the book just before the holidays. Watch it on YouTube.
