Making its first appearance in US Vogue more than 100 years ago, the bra celebrates a century of supporting women! Although Dutch dancer Mata Hari was among the first to don a bra, the “under the shoulder boulder holder” didn’t wash up on US shores until its 1907 debut. Patented years later by New York socialite Mary Phelps Jacob, she sold her “Backless Brassiere” rights to Warners Brothers Corset Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut for $1,500.In celebration of the bra’s centennial anniversary, the web is awash with galleries on tiscali.lifestyle, Sky News and (of course) Vogue.
