FUNKY BROWN CHICK, Inc. will close our doors on April 18th for Good Friday. Our firm observes both US and Portuguese holidays as part of our global perspective, which is why we’re closed on Good Friday. We take pride in respecting and honoring the beliefs of others and recognizing the value of cultural traditions in shaping individual identities.
We also want to remind everyone that history offers hope! This Christian religion’s historical crucifixion wasn’t the end of the story. It was the beginning. What power structures intended as a warning became a symbol of resistance. What was meant to silence a movement instead amplified it across centuries and continents.
Unpacking Good Friday
Good Friday marks the commemoration of Jesus’s crucifixion for Christians. It was a state-sanctioned killing that reveals how power structures have always responded to those who dare to question them.
Germans call it “Karfreitag” (Sorrowful Friday). The English “good” likely comes from an obsolete meaning: “holy.” The historical English name—”Long Friday”—captures the day’s weight. While Christians worldwide observe this solemn day through fasting, church services, and processions, its origins remind us that religious observances have always been intertwined with power and politics.
Ancient Executions, Modern Parallels
The crucifixion at Good Friday’s center wasn’t random. Rome reserved this particular punishment for those who threatened imperial authority.
Jesus’s “crime”? Challenging religious hierarchies, questioning economic exploitation, and gathering a community of people in need of justice. People historically underserved, unvalued, and cast aside.
Sound familiar? While our world looks vastly different from Roman-occupied Judea, the pattern persists. Today’s power structures still deploy state violence against those fighting for justice. Communities organizing for reproductive freedom, immigrant rights, and racial equity face modern versions of imperial backlash.
Transforming Sorrow into Solidarity
While Christians observe Good Friday through the lens of resurrection hope, its lessons extend beyond any single tradition. The day invites all of us to recognize how systems of oppression impact so many communities! And it invites us all to commit ourselves to transforming that reality.
Today, we have unprecedented opportunities for collective action toward human rights. Digital tools allow us to document abuses that once remained hidden. We have opportunities to mobilize global solidarity movements. We get to imagine (and act on) new possibilities for justice. The crucifixions of today—whether literal or metaphorical—are increasingly difficult to hide and increasingly met with organized resistance.
Your Call to Action
As we step away from our desks this Good Friday, we invite you to join us in reflection and renewal:
- Rest Deliberately: Take time to recharge—whether through religious observance, quiet reflection, or joyful connection with loved ones. Revolution requires sustainability.
- Recognize Injustice: Notice where today’s power structures “crucify” various communities through policy violence, economic exploitation, or social injustice.
- Rise in Solidarity: Choose one concrete action that supports communities facing these modern crucifixions—whether through donation, advocacy, or showing up in person.
While our team observes this day of reflection, we remain committed to creating a more just world through our work in data analytics, digital strategy, voter engagement, fundraising, and narrative change. We’ll return on Monday, April 21st, ready to continue partnering with you to transform data into action and stories into change.
