Why Our Firm Is Closed on Veterans Day 2025

On November 11th, our firm will close its doors in observance of Veterans Day—a day that pays tribute to those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. As part of our global perspective, we observe all US and Portuguese holidays, recognizing the histories and values that shape both countries.

Veterans Day traces its roots back to Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of World War I, “the war to end all wars.” On this day, we recognize the contributions of all veterans, from the earliest battles to modern conflicts.

As we reflect on their service, we also acknowledge the challenges many veterans face.

For starters, not all who served did so by choice. The drafting system, implemented during certain periods in history, compelled young men to serve in the military, leaving them with little agency over their future. The burdens borne by drafted veterans were profound, as they were called to put their lives on the line for their country, often without the opportunity to pursue their personal aspirations.

Recruitment efforts have also historically targeted communities facing economic hardships. For many individuals, joining the military provides a chance for job security, access to benefits, and a pathway to a better life. This reality underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of inequity that lead to such recruitment patterns.

Despite promises of support, too many veterans still encounter barriers to care and opportunity. From inadequate healthcare access to the stigma surrounding mental health and the growing rates of houselessness among former service members, it’s clear that we need better systems in place. Recent events, including active-duty personnel struggling with food insecurity during government shutdowns, highlight the urgency of ensuring that those who serve are not left behind.

This Veterans Day, we encourage everyone to move beyond a simple “thanks.” True appreciation means taking action: stand up, speak out, and push for change at local, state, and federal levels. Write to your officials. Protest with your community. Vote at every opportunity. Together we can ensure all veterans are treated with the respect and dignity everyone deserves.
